Just because something "isn't as bad" doesn't mean it's perfectly acceptable either. I would consider being shot in the head with a gun a totally preferable alternative to being diced into tiny pieces while still alive, but that doesn't mean I'm clamoring for someone to bust a cap in me. |

You mean that Boondocks episode was right? They do have panty vending machines in Japan? Wow

The problem with that statement (and I'm willing to bet, with the book as well) is that Otaku (even the often less-than-pleasant Japanese variety) aren't all lolicons, and not all lolicons are Otaku. It's making a generalization based on a few scenes in a few series. I'm sure that for every series with loli fanservice someone can name, I can name two without any. Saying "Otaku are loliphiles" is like saying "Muslims are terrorists," or "People who play Grand Theft Auto are violent criminals." They're taking a tiny minority that makes up the worst the group has to offer and using it to villify everyone. |

I do worry about Japanese otakudom becoming misogynistic, but reducing a complex social issue to otaku-bashing would IMO be a disservice to the society. |

Some women don't like to buy panties from stores, other may need a set right now. Almost everything is sold from vending machines in Japan. For example tourist sites will often have vending machines selling film & disposable cameras. Vending machines selling wine & beer are common. Nothing deviant about it at all. -t |

Hell, you can find those at your local zoo. They did make a point, but the blanket statement is too off-putting. Anime does not equal porn and it never will. |

It seems these people can't figure out who's more to blame for Japan's problems—Koreans, or otaku. Still, there are some fairly prominent otaku in Japan who are of Korean descent, so perhaps they can just combine the two conspiracy theories together and be done with it.

The infamous japanese vending machine was in fact for used school girl panties. It was in an adult shop, and didn't last very long. This is the one folk talk about because it is disgusting. There really are some horrible anime out there. But imho it is not Otaku whom have the problem with women. It seems to me that the entire Japanese structure is misogynist. The lolicon and moe crap is pervasive in too much Japanese entertainment. |

Okay, I confess, I'm probably confusing the matter with the "burusera" phenomenon (as seen in episode 1 of Sakura Diaries when Urara offers "freshly-worn high school girl panties with stains, 10,000 yen"), but the point is, Japan (like many other societies) has its fair share of twisted, deviant, and bizarre habits/fetishes, and it's not really fair to say that otaku are exceptionally bad just because of lolicon and moe content. |

About the only valid point I see in the list is the complaint on lolicon. However, that is still a gross generaliztion. And still a bit hypocritical considering that there are plenty of photoshoot books featuring 14 year old girls (some possibly younger), some containing nudity.
The 'discriminating agiainst women' complaint is laughable. Japan as a whole has a problem with this. This book seems to be making Otaku into scapegoats for the problems of Japanese society as a whole. On a side note, what kind of lolicon fanservice does Shakugan no Shana have? I've only seen the first episode which had no fanservice. |

You're not confused. There have been burusera vending machines with used panties sold in them and pictures of the high school girl who wore them. |

Yup, but even though that type has been outlawed since a couple of years ago, the stories about it seem to keep going on forever and ever... |
