Do you mean closing of the second film under the negatives?

For me the original television series will always be the definitive version, not the home video release of the series or these compilation movies.
But hey, the nuzzling scene was pretty cool. Last edited by dtm42 on Wed Oct 24, 2012 3:36 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I don't know, I like the cleanup they did for the BD's. |

I liked the clean-up too, but I wasn't so keen on some of the additions and changes. |

I don't know if I should view that as good or bad. Nothing really wrong with Fist of the North Star 2 for me, except a few plot issues, but that could be different to others. I'm probably missing the point though, all I could think is maybe it looks like it is keeping the spirit of it while messing with the plot. Anyway I was on the edge about if I should watch these or not since I had seen the show on CrunchyRoll, but since it sounds like they did a good job with it I will probably check these out when I can. I personally prefer how they ended episode 11 with no BGM in the tv version - it left more of an "OHSHIT" emotional punch for me. The disc clean-up included the "Magia" song. |

I didn't get to make it to Houston for the showing but I'm looking forward to watching these movies.
Totally. That was the only change I really didn't like. I really felt like Magia ruined that scene in the touched up version. |

It's really not necessary is the main reason. It's nice to know, but its really not needed for the rest of the story. If you're looking to cut things to shave off time, you can get rid of it easily. On the other hand, it would have taken all of 30 seconds (at most) to include.
I vaguely recall a few changes that looked like downgrades when looking at the comparison images, as I usually do when looking at them for SHAFT shows. They vast majority of the changes are for the better, or just different though. My disappointment was watching a bit of the first episode (mainly to sample the dub) and noticing the lackluster art quality/character model consistency that DIDN'T get fixed and wishing they focused their attention more on that. But the movies will probably be my main way of re-experiencing the show in the future anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter that much now. I saw the movies at the Alamo Drafhouse and it considered it well-worth the $21 tickets, ~$20 in food (including tip) and 87 mile round trip to see it. And I got the poster, which I was not expecting. (Still a little annoyed at the lack of merchandise to buy, particularly the film guides). Hearing Magia fill the theater is absolutely divine, and the theater size and sound really increased the impact of the final scene of the first film. I noticed a few things missing (most notably Mami's backstory and a brief fight between Homura in Sayaka from around episode 7 or 8) but I actually didn't notice the new scenes. Everything seemed like it was their in the first place, with the exception of one short scene in the second film, which I'm pretty sure was just a scenery change. I want to rewatch the TV series right before I watch the films when they come out on BD so I can make a more direct comparison. Also, here's a nice little blog post on the effect the changes have on the first film.
That was likely a result of episodes 11 and 12 being aired back-to-back (after being delayed ~2 months) more than anything else. It probably would have aired with the Magia ED there in the first place if not for that. Not that I disagree that it would have been better to leave it that way for the home video release. |

Interesting blog post there, nice to see someone examining the tragedy element as it relates to Sayaka. I had written about it a bit before, but didn't (for some reason I don't remember) really use her as an example (maybe because it's so obvious about her character arc in the show that I didn't think it needed mention). Without seeing the films yet, I do think that arc is a perfect "halfway point" as far as the narrative goes (despite being more in episode count in the show).

Went out to the Chicago showing last weekend, and I absolutely loved it. They cut just enough to trim the run time, but not enough to make it make absolutely no sense to anyone who hasn't seen the TV series (See the TTGL films.)
I dragged a few of my friends who had never seen Madoka, and they both loved it. So thats a good sign. I do agree completely with worrying about the sequel. I feel as though their is no point in continuing something that wrapped itself up ever so perfectly... Especially now that they want to make a 26 episode series after finishing the third movie. |

I liked how natural the movie edits were, overall. Almost worth the price of admission for Kajiura alone.
The worst part was definitely the audience. There was some guy a few rows behind me who kept falling asleep and snoring through both movies. And of course there were the folks who laughed at some of the more serious parts. The scene that sticks out in my mind was when spoiler[Madoka threw Sayaka's soul gem away]. Jerks. |

I don't mean to nitpick but this doesn't make sense. Four episodes only adds up to about 80 minutes of content. Even including a few minutes of new content, this falls way short of the film's run-time. Is it maybe a 7/5 split? |

No, the split is correct. Movie one ends spoiler[with Sayaka becoming a witch], which is the end of episode 8 |
