Saiyuki has been out for a while and it still hasn´t ended and I´m wondering if it ever will.

First there were the 52 ADV episodes and the Requiem movie. Then Geneon all of sudden announces they are going to release Saiyuki Reload. The Reload series is almost over and now Gunlock has been announced. Does the series end with Gunlock? Are there more series? Will this anime have a cheap ending where they never accomplish their goal because people grew tired of the series so it got discontinued?

I havn´t been buying Reload, I've been getting the Double Barrel Collections, so I don´t know if the story is wrapped up in Reload but the release of Gunlock makes me feel like it is not.

I have not seen the show, but I think it is based off the book "Journey to the West" I haven't finished reading the book yet, im about 1200 pages into it and about 400 left, but if it holds true to the book, it should not go on forever.

Thanks for the answer to a question that everyone who has seen Saiyuki already knows, that its based on "journey to the west", but it doesn't really answer my question which is that if Saiyuki Gunlock ends the Saiyuki Saga. shirokiryuu stated that it is the last series in Saiyuki but is it because the story ended? Or is it because it was discontinued? Or is it one of those anime endings where they continue on their journey at the end?

Sorry I sound like a jerk but I saw that there was a new post so I thought I would finally get my answer and then I saw your post and it pissed me off.

As far as I know, Gunlock is the end of the anime for now, but there may be another series that comes out later. The manga is still being serialized in Japan, but I'm not sure how often a new chapter comes out or anything like that. It's entirely possible that the anime series are just on hold until more material is made available.

Kazuya Minekura has a detailed and fairly specific plot that is also pretty open to filler insertion (see the entire second half of Gensomaden Saiyuki with the exception of the past lives bits for a prime example).

For a manga breakdown...Saiyuki ran for 9 volumes, then Minekura changed publishers and continued the story as Saiyuki RELOAD, which is still running as far as I know. The past lives/500 years ago stuff is covered in Saiyuki Gaiden, which was on hiatus for a couple years, but is now being worked on again, IIRC.

For anime equivalencies....Gensomaden Saiyuki covers the first five or so volumes of the Saiyuki manga, then goes off onto a 20+ episode filler story with Homura and the other deity characters. The only manga-related things in there are the elements taken from Saiyuki Gaiden. Then we have the Saiyuki RELOAD anime, which starts out with material from the Saiyuki RELOAD manga, then goes back to the story in the Saiyuki manga, changing things like costumes for sake of consistency. I'm not sure what the Gunlock anime covers as I have yet to see it.

I hope that helps answer your question, even if it basically boils down to "I'm really not sure whether Gunlock is the end or not."

I also haven't seen Gunlock yet, but from what I've read, Gunlock sorta covers recent Reload manga chapters. Like the Reload anime, there's a good deal of filler before getting to the longer story arc. I believe the long arc in Gunlock starts in Reload manga #3, then they take a tanget as that storyline hasn't concluded in the manga yet and barely started when they did Gunlock.

So, my guess would be that once Minekura moves away from the Hazel arc and starts something new, they might do a new animation.

Saiyuki (Korean: 손오공) is actually a very old and traditional story about a half-monkey half-man who travels with a monk. Both Japan and Korea have their own versions of the "complete" series so it's really just up to the directors/artists/whoever to decide how many episodes they want to make, making up stories however much they want.

We know what Saiyuki is. However, the original legend is not what is being discussed here. Specifically, we are discussing the anime based on Kazuya Minekura's manga adaptation of the legend, which is quite different from the original in many ways. Even the kanji used for the title are different.

Legend --> 西遊記 (I'm fairly sure that's correct)
Manga --> 最遊記 (I know this one is)

To be honest, I think about the only things that really stayed the same between the legend and Kazuya Minekura's manga were the names of the characters and the fact that they're going west.

Haha, you know, i've watched the Saiyuki series and find the first one ( Gensomaden Saiyuki) is by far, the most interesting... The graphics ain't as polished as the ones in Gunlock or Reload, but the storyline's great. The other two? well, apart from being a bit 'draggy', i think they should have introduced more interesting villains and that the saiyuki guys should not have appeared overly suave...sigh, the fact that their loooonnnng journey 'barely' ended, i gave up watching the last few episodes in e 3 rd series altogether! kinda sad, don't ya think? Smile

Maybe you didn't get the point, but I was making a reference to the original legend and the fact that even the original legend didn't really have an end. Maybe you can't connect the two dots so I'll do it for you:

Dot1: The original legend doesn't really end anywhere
Dot2: The manga/anime probably won't end anytime soon either, as long as they can whip out episodes.

So you draw this thing called a segment between the two dots and you get a logical relationship, k? :)

Yeah but just because the book didn't end doesn't answer my question. Sure it's a hint but it since it is an anime and is different from the original story it may have an ending.

If I wanted to know about the novels, books, and mangas I would have posted this message in the manga section.

It seems no one has yet to see Gunlock that has replied so I guess I may have to wait and see but I would hate to add another "Inuyasha" to my shelves.

Hmm...I havn't heard too much about this series, but what I have heard has been pretty good so far. However, it's all been single user reviews. I know this is a really long series right? Is it worth the time and effort to watch it? I don't have it yet, but it's on my list of anime i'm planning on getting (Not posted on this website, because it's just too long Anime hyper ).

Is it worth getting and sitting through every episode? What is everyone's opinion on this anime?

First you people stole Mid-Summer Festival, now you want to steal Saiyuki?!

Quit it, man. You guys have done something really good (like Yon-sama); keep up the good work and stop stealing others' cultural heritage. Otherwise you'll face more humiliations in addition to your stem cell research.

It ends when they finally meet Gautama Buddha at Chapter 100.

I was referencing the manga in order to clarify my answer. Since the anime is based on the manga which is loosely based on the legend, I thought it made sense. *sigh*

Like I said in my original post, the only really certain thing we can say is that Gunlock is currently the end of the Saiyuki anime. It came out in 2004, and there's been no other animated material to be released since that point. However, that doesn't mean that there won't be another series at a later point in time.

There was a three year gap between the release of the first TV series and the release of RELOAD. During that gap, however, the movie was released in theaters. They also had some seiyuu tours at the time as well.

*shrug* You don't have to get all of the series if you don't want to, you know.
