Has an anime adaptation made a decent character in the manga into an annoying git?
Kyo from Fruits Basket- Since the anime didn't last long enough, he didn't receive the right amount of character development. Throughout the anime, he was incredibly whiny in comparison to the manga. Everyone from Naruto- Naruto is a bigger dumbass than usual, Tsunade is a lazy, short-tempered alcoholic, Hinata is a stalker that faints whenever Naruto so much as looks at her, and Sakura's character development wasn't only set back to the beginning of the series. She became an even bigger bully than before. God, the fillers are the Star Wars Prequels of anime, and the copious amounts of character derailment is only the beginning. Orihime from Bleach- You have Pierrot to blame for everyone thinking Orihime is more kidnap-prone than Princess Peach. The manga had her willingly go to Aizen, but that counts as a kidnapping (according to the idiotic IchiRuki shippers). However, the fillers make her into a bigger damsel in distress. Whenever a filler episode focuses on her, you think it would give her a chance to shine, but no! Ichigo has to come in to save her. Did I mention that Studio Pierrot can go *beep* themselves? |

Only notable case for me would have to be Full Moon wo Sagashite's Izumi Rio. The manga portrayed him as a tragic and sympathetic character who eventually comes to Mitsuki's side to aid her from facing her fated death. The anime, however, portrays him as a cold-hearted antagonist sticking around only to cause suffering for Mitsuki, Meroko and Takuto.

I don't know. The manga was pretty terrible about that anyway, given that she still has this fate-defying ability built up throughout the Hueco Mundo arc, and then she finally gets an opportunity to prove herself when Ichigo is fighting Ulqiorra, but instead she just cries out for him to save her. I can't say this directly, as I've not encountered the source material first-hand, but I've heard that Cecily from The Sacred Blacksmith is something other than completely useless in the light novels. In the anime, she only barely holds her own in fights and is constantly pestering Luke to make her a sword so she'll suck less. Chachamaru from Negima. In the manga, her driving character arc is her desire to be human and determining whether or not she is. There's a chapter about how her mechanical systems begin replicating the physiological effects of emotions despite that not being part of her programming. It might not be ground breaking in its originality, but it had depth. The anime, on the other hand, goes with the cheap gag of having someone accidentally pressing the wrong button and making her go on a berserk missile rampage. Twice. |

That's the one I immediately thought of when I read the title. I especially cannot stand Jerry Jewel's voice for Kyo Sohma. I loved Kyo in the manga and hated him in the anime. |

Grell from Black Butler. In the manga, he's badass, creepy, and funny at the same time. In the anime, he's made into annoying comic relief character. I groaned every time he came was in a scene in the anime, but I was excited at hints that he would appear in the manga.

Where is his cool darker side from the manga in the anime? He and his relationship with Akito is so much more interesting in the manga. I wish they were the main characters. |

I find it hard to agree with you, but you are correct that the manga is leagues above the anime in terms of quality. |

Ruined is too strong a word, but I was really disappointed on how Motoko Kusanagi was changed in the first Ghost in the Shell film. In the manga, she actually had a sense of humor and didn't wear the almost emotionless mask that she wore for the film.

I haven't read the original manga unfortunately but, in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kusanagi isn't nearly as stiff as in the original movie and actually makes the rare joke. Have you seen SAC? I'd be curious if someone who read the manga thought SAC caught her better in the subjects you mentioned. |

As far as Fruits Basket goes, I wouldn't say ruined so much as sometimes underdeveloped compared to the manga due to the anime only covering the first third of the story. Hatori and the Yuki Fan Club were overexposed compared to their roles in the manga, as the anime covered most of their stories and they had about only one really major scene each left, while Ritsu's role was almost complete in the anime. On the other hand, Hiro still had alot more development to go, and Haru and Momiji were somewhat underexposed compared to the manga (especially Momiji considering the huge if understated role he eventually played in Kyo, Akito and to some extent Tohru's stories after he hit puberty). There were, of course, characters in the manga - most prominently the final two Zodiac members - who didn't even appear in the anime.

First, you get a type cookie for mentioning my favorite anime/manga series: (:.) Secondly, I feel your pain....but it wasn't exactly the anime's fault...because the show was almost over before Izumi's true backstory was revealed. Simply put: the anime had no material to work with concerning Izumi.

I like to joke with my fellow Valkyria Chronicles fans that the anime improved Alicia Melchiott's character by finally making her personality match her her appearance. It's just a way to make light of the situation, so that I do not rage whenever I think of how much the anime changed her character.
In the game, she's a nice country girl. She's generally calm and mature. Although she's by no means the oldest, wisest, or most experienced in the squad, she's sort of the team mom--fitting with her "maternal" potential. She displays a range of emotions, including annoyance at Welkin's eccentricities. In the anime, she's the typical teenage tsundere love interest--with twin tails and zettai ryouiki to boot. Her annoyance with Welkin's eccentricities is exaggerated beyond recognition. I'd be able to console myself with the faces she makes in the anime, except it just reminds me of how the anime changed her from a mature young woman to a childish caricature. This is more or less the anime that turned tsundere into a character type that I liked to one that cause me to roll me eyes. |
