Yesterday on the show Yes Dear they referenced Urotsukidoji. (One of the characters started colecting comic books prompting the female lead to ask "You mean like kids comics? Or those japanese comics like Overfiend where woman are taken against their will by monsters?) I found this odd. And it got me thinking.
Have you ever seen a reference to an anime/manga series in an unlikely place? How do you think it reflects the series? |

It's not funny, it's offensive and shows that the people are ignorant. They shouldn't make fun of something they know nothing about. |

I agree. In my country people use to relate anime and manga to hentai, and I have to explain over and over and OVER agai that it's not. Hentai is one thing, and decent series are a completely different branch of the tree.
And it's worse when it's people that have never seen a series

Maybe not funny for you, might be for others, don't pull an Ohoni now and label your opinion as fact. Also doesn't reflect them as ignorant, just represents it as a joke, if everything on television shows were taken seriously then this world would be far more messed up than it is and shows like "Family Guy" and "The Simpsons" couldn't possible exist. Sit back, take a deep breath and calm down, few people watch a sit-com to guide their lives or learn about other aspects of culture.
And for the record, I enjoy the show as well. |

Dude, the fact that they still remember overfiend doesn't show that they "know nothing about" it. It would have been much less funny if you were in charge of that line, which would end up being "OH, ANime and Manga, made by the Japanese, who are deep and meaningful and awesome! I like Manga, and Anime! Don't diss it, otherwise you're like 4kids! I hate 4kids! Hey guys lets talk about Anime and Manga for the rest of our allotted time! It is awesome! It's better than anything! Hello, I talk to cute girls, all the time! I am awesome! Let's watch Ah! Moon Princess and play Sakubah!" |

Not to be an ass or anything, but those people are actually right considering that hentai (going by our strict terminology) is *gasp* a type of anime and manga (again, that's going by American definitions). And about the critism, let 'em bitch, just enjoy what you love |

I rather people associate anime with Hentai than with shows like Pôkemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. But then again thats just me.
I don´t remember any other show referring to anime but I rememeber watching a movie with my gf called The Wedding Date, it starred Grace from the gay show Will & Grace, and the guy was watching Samurai Seven, you know the Kurosawa Samurai Epic. I also heard The 40 Year Old Virgin has a few anime references. I ignore people who say all anime is porn I figure is useless, and rather dorky, to try to explain to these people that anime is not porn but hey maybe one day they will see for themselves. Some guy at work, he´s around 30, were talking about anime and he was talking about how when he first heard of anime, from his sister because she is a huge anime fan, he thought it was gonna be stupid and childish but then he said he kinda liked it and we were talking about Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Escaflowne, and GTO, I have never seen GTO but he thought it was a funny show and he was telling me about it. He gave me faith that some day adults will experience anime for themselves and see what it´s really about instead of just asuming. |

hehe, actually i agree with the line above... i usually don't watch tv ( mostly gameing and anime ) but I remmember linkin park's music video's had anime refrence to gundam. ( donnu which band memmber is a gundam fan ) |

Yet another sitcom is stereotyping anime. Last night they were airing the Christmas special for the sitcom According To Jim. One of the characters, Andy (I believe that was his name) asked the grandmother on the show if he was his favorite and she said yes, but she was going to have to talk to him about those filfthy magazines under his bed and he responds by saying "It's just anime." The first time on Yes Dear was kind of cute but now it's just getting sickening. This is crossing the line. Since the character who made the anime comment was kind of dorky, this is only going to continue to give people the idea that anime is something that only perverted geeks watch. In my opinion, I would rather have them make references to Pokemon and Yugioh. At least they're not something perverted and I happen to like Pokemon and Yugioh, anyway. My parents were watching that sitcom last night. I wonder if they knew what anime was. They know I like it, but to them it's just Japanese cartoons and they don't know the term anime, so the joke probably went over their heads.
