Chōyaku Hyakunin Isshu: Uta Koi Plot Summary: Uta Koi tells the "super-liberal interpretation" of the Hyakuninisshu anthology compiled during Japan's Heian period of 100 romantic poems from 100 different poets such as The Tale of Genji's Murasaki Shikibu. (?) Episodes Historical, Josei, Ep. 1 I'm not gonna pretend like i'm an expert on the Karuta poems but it definitely seemed like it was a "super-liberal interpretation" of them. It watches kinda like Folktales From Japan i guess, although given my previous love of Chihayafuru i'm finding this one alot more enjoyable that Folktales. Art was fine i guess, same with animation but a real WTF???? to the OP and ED songs. I'm really confused as to how they became on the show cause neither really fit the show at all in my opinion, especially the ED, i'm really curious as to how that manifested itself. That being said though, i still liked the OP song itself, just maybe not in conjuncture with this particular series. Also, liked the way they started off with the spoiler[Chihayafuru poem, ]i guess they had a target audience themselves with this onespoiler[ (unless it is actually the first poem in the manga, not read it myself)]. Also, big thanks to Crunchyroll for actually picking this one up, i totally didn't expect it to get picked up by anyone, either legal or fansub, and was essentially resigning myself to having to drop this because it would be non-avaliable/too unpredictable in releases due to its really, really niche market Last edited by Volibear on Thu Jul 05, 2012 10:05 am; edited 1 time in total |

May help if you change the title to just Utakoi.
Well, that was a delightful surprise. I was expecting something filled with poems, but it does seem to have a pretty good story. But then again, first episodes are usually tricky things, so I'll wait for the second to draw a solid conclusion. |

Love the art style in this show. Hopefully the stories will be more like than the 1st than the 2nd though.

I've actually started to watch it, because I had to translate a lot of the poems for classical Japanese class and was curious what the anime would be like. It's only the first episode, but it looks good, except for the OP and ED song. It's...just weird. Doesn't match the period at all

I don't mind the OP; I kinda like it. I hate the ED though.
Episode 2 This was all one story this time, not two, but still tied to the original two stories. I wonder if all the stories will be related in one way or another. I kinda like that idea. What was weird with this episode though, is spoiler[why did they pixelate all the snakes? Was it because it was too "violent" with all the frog-eating? I found that completely bizarre, like this was all snake porn or something.] |

Pixelation/censorship of pest animals (cockroaches the most common) is a thing I've seen in a bunch of anime. I figured it was a common joke, though it does seem strange appearing in this context.

Haven't watched the second episode yet (will wait 'til Saturday then watch all new episodes of the week) but the first episode I did like. I, too, love love poems, and I'd love to see more bittersweet stories. The main reason why I decided to watch Utakoi is because of Chihayafuru, so I'm glad they started with that one (although what do I know of proper ordering).

I'm really loving the art style for this show. The way they show clouds and rain in particular are really interesting. The flat shading and thin lines, as well as some of the angles and the way they skew perspective in certain shots, reminds me of much of the art produced during that time (particularly The Tale of Genji, since that's what we spent the most time studying in my AP Art History course xD). I also like how the thick outlines around all the characters gives the whole thing a certain "storybook" feel that really fits.
I would like to know why they decided to make Fujiwara no Teika look like a foreigner, however. Blonde hair and blue eyes? I'm confused. Storywise, it seems like it'll be pretty cute. Two of the three stories I've seen so far (watched the first two episodes) were pretty decent, and I do like that they started out with the "Chihayafuru" poem. I guess that means they know their audience That's certainly the main reason I'm watching- a good companion show while I finish up the last half of Chihayafuru!

Looking at the popularity of this anime makes me wonder whether the female fanbase prefer males being dramatic and dumb like in Tiger & Bunny, or romantic, stable, and intellectual like the ones in Utakoi.
Needless to say, I'm really enjoying the anime. The romance and flirting involved so far have been very educational. /evil laugh

I just finished episode 3, and I love the unconventional animation. The ways they depicted the rain was very interesting and unique. It gives the show more of an artistic flare. It makes it feel like I'm watching an art piece rather than an anime, which is the main reason I'm watching it. Romantic poems are way outside of my normal cup of tea. I probably wouldn't have watched this in a stronger season, but the animation and lack of reasons not to watch are good enough reasons to continue watching.

Well, I certainly prefer the stable, intellectual ones, at least in romance anime! But then, I'm not a fujoshi. I enjoyed Tiger and Bunny, but not because I shipped the leads together (I didn't). I don't even seem to have yaoi goggles... (Not that I want them. )

Wow, I knew this show was taking some creative license but I actually decided to do some research and colour me shocked. The events transpiring in some of the Anime's stories are completely and utterly different than what happened in real life. For example, episode one doesn't mention that the dude was spoiler[banished for the attempted elopement.] In episode eleven Murasaki wrote the poem spoiler[about her friend, when it reality she wrote it about her (male) lover.]
I do like the stories in Uta Koi but now I realise that they only contain the bare-bones of historical accuracy. |
