Is VIZ's Excel Saga flipped or not? And for the record, is there any way to tell by the cover of a VIZ book whether or not it is flipped?

It's unflipped. An easy way to tell whether a Viz property is flipped or not is the way the bar at the top goes. Where it's solid is where the spine lies, and should let you know whether it's flipped or not. |

Also just um, looking at the book pretty much easily shows whether the book is flipped or not, depending on which side the cover is on.

No, it's license is held by Viz. Flipped or not-flipped refers to whether the book has been altered in order for it to be read left-to-right, like the English language is, rather than right-to-left like Japanese. To do this, the pages in the manga need to be flipped so that they are like mirror reflections of the originals, so that the first frame which was originally on the right side is now on the left. |

Well I'm not exactly an expert on manga, (this is actually my first post ever in the manga section) but I think its when they are left to right (American style) as opposed to right to left (Original Japanese style).
I have my Excel Saga manga right here. It says "Viz" on the side of it. Edit: Damn, somebody's already answered both questions. |

I kinda figured it was like that I just haven't heard described as being flipped must a new term or something.

I don't think it's a new term, though I guess it depends how you define "new". I've been a manga fan for about 3 years now and I've always known the term.

While "flip" wasn't common until 2003 when Tokyopop started releasing unflipped 100% original manga. Another good source for term is the lexicon, while flip isn't cover since it's well known, but a lot of other anime terms are. |

I've always heard it as flipped.
And flopped, which I assume is used derogatively in the "failure" sense. |
