My feelings are a bit mixed for this series as I still have it on-hold right now but definitely looking forward to a marathon when the anime finishes airing (:

First Half - 5/10
Second Half so far - 8/10
I expect it'll go down a bit since it looks like it'll be filler till the end, but the 2nd half was better since it actually lived up to its name.

Carl pretty much nailed the essence of the show.
No, its not really "Bodacious", or even particularly "Mouretsu", but it is incredibly charming, and Marika is definitely one of the best female leads I can think of.
Also, she's starting to gather quite the harem.

The later episodes are even better as a lot of characters are introduced and they are all given a lot space.

This is one of those shows where I don't need to watch the newest episode because I'm dying to see what happens next. It's that type of show that I'll watch when there's nothing else, so right now with so many other series I'd rather watch it's in holding pattern at ep18 and I'll watch the rest some other time.

For a show featuring cute girls and space (and a high production value), you'd ASSUME that it would be a more interesting watch than it was for the first 12 episodes. I like the concepts the show introduces, but the story and characters are just so BORING. I've already dropped the series.

At this point, I'm just watching for completion and lowered my expectations to something like the equivalent of Manabi Straight IN SPACE. The show just lacks any kind of real adventure or danger after the Golden Ghost Ship arc, and even that episode failed to really wow me visually. I had hoped the animators would try to do something special with setting up the scope and vastness of an ancient double space colony, but it came off as rote and straight forward. I guess the way the weightlessness works can be credited to the animators, but the nitrogen-filled treasure room is given to the original author. With only a few episodes left, there's really no room for another big arc, and I doubt the show would even bother.

As you might know, this show was in development hell for a while, so even though there is enough novel content now, they are finishing it off with filler apparently. From the last episode and the next episode preview, it just looks like it'll be a lot of high school girl hijinx the rest of the way. By the time it first got the greenlight back in early 2009, the most recent novel covered the arc with Jenny. They've had 3 novels since, but yeah.
Also, is it just me or did the most recent episode have some seriously QUALITY animation? I'm starting to think we're seeing the reason it was delayed for so long... I'm hoping it doesn't stay at that level the rest of the way.

I absolutely love this series! I find the pacing refreshing, as it is a character driven tale and not dependant on action to tell its story. Marika is one of the finest female leads I have ever seen, and a wonderful role model. (I have my 10 year-old daughter, who is into robotics and wants to be an engineer, watching it for that reason.) The arc after the Golden Ghost Ship was the best yet! I hope they get a chance to finish off more of the novels with another season! (I also wish that someone would license the novels, or at least translate them...)

I'm going to go ahead and guess that you're not current with the series, because there's no way you could say that after what the Bentenmaru faced by trying to rescue someone who was being held against their will. That was definitely adventure and danger.
Liking the series. Love that it takes its time and doesn't just throw out random action scenes with no purpose. Kind of sad that the rest of the content will be filler, but I trust Satelight to make it worth watching. With the 7k+ copies that the volumes have been selling I have hope for a second season as well.

Well, to be honest, after how it got delayed over and over again, and took nearly 3 years to finally come out, I doubt they'll wanna go through that again. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but I doubt that 7k copies is anywhere close to covering the overall costs they put into it over all that time.

I remember the kiss being more exciting than any of the action. We already know it's impossible for anyone to really die in this series, so there is no sense of danger.

That's an understandable opinion. To be honest, Pirates has a relatively cheap release structure, with 4 episodes on a volume for all but one. That means they need to sell quite a bit more than normal to be on par with a more common release structure.
To be sure though, the 7k totals are much better than the initial 4k that I thought it had sold.
I'm curious on if the anime has renewed interest in the light novels myself, but I have no clue where I can find Oricon results for that. That would be a big part of if the anime series was a profitable venture or not I would think.

Nah, see. When Jenny pulled out a gun and ran like hell to the Silent Whisper to make her escape (she isn't a Leia who needed a Luke to rescue her) that was danger. Certainly the most danger anybody had been in since the Lightning 11 was shooting at the Odette.

Isn't the 4 episodes per volume only the DVD release? Pirates has a really funny release schedule between the BD and DVD.
Also, there seemed to be supply constraints for the show discussed over at Mania (too lazy to bring up the relevant posts right now).

Nope. The DVD release is 13 volumes with 2 episodes each. The BD release is 7 volumes with 2/4/4/4/4/4/4 episodes each as far as I know.
