I just finished a series called Shiki and I find it tremendously good. Straight out, I got it through not so legit ways and I still intend to support those who made Shiki production successful. Some ways I thought of:

My first though was buying a DVD of it from a legitimate distributer, which I think rightstuff.com is. However I'm not wholly interested in the physical box or disc(I hate clutter and all), and the shipping costs is unncessary.

Another way I thought off is probably getting subscriptions on Funimation? It's from that website that I got to rightstuff, but I just wanna know if supporting Funimation will support anime devs.

Or perhaps there's just another way to support anime devs as a pirate? Do share!

Generally speaking, buying the physical product is the best method even if you don't really care to watch it. Supporting Funi's streams does help, but the revenue off of that is pretty slim compared to what they make off a DVD sale. I don't know if Shiki has much in the way of merchandising (figures, CDs, etc), but importing stuff like that is another angle a lot of people take in supporting the industry.

If you want some insight to how the anime economy works so you can figure out how your dollars are supporting creators, there's a great series of articles published not long ago on the very subject.

Buy the DVD, but if you don't care for it taking up space, either sell it on to someone or give it to someone as a gift. You'll potentially get some money back, but you've supported the creators and it won't be taking up space. Have you looked to see if it's available on iTunes?

If you live in the US, you could have watched Shiki legally at Hulu. So I recommend you either watch it again there, or let your computer "watch" it so Hulu and Funi will collect some advertising revenues from you. Last time I rewatched Hikaru no Go I watched my fansubs, which have translator's notes and other information not available from the VIZ's subtitles, and set up another computer to "watch" the show at Hulu at the same time. Since Hulu will automatically advance to the next episode, it's easy to do.

In fact, pretty much all of Funimation's catalog is available for legal streaming at Hulu, as are many series from VIZ and Media Blasters. Neo-ADV (Sentai, Section23) has its own streaming service at TheAnimeNetwork.com.

You could also subscribe to Crunchyroll as I do. You'll spend more on two cups of coffee at Starbuck's than the monthly $7 fee at Crunchy. There are months when I don't have anything to watch there, and others where I'll watch two or three series.

I thought you were talking about supporting series that are entirely unlicensed in R1 and available only in fansubs. I can't bring myself to buy the Japanese releases for these series, since they usually have no subtitles and are just too expensive for me to justify. Since I have no interest in most licensed merchandise, I've taken the approach of buying the Japanese OST CD's for shows like Bartender or Dennou Coil.

Sorry for late response...and somebody changed my title..Now it seem as if I want to do illegit things to support developers. I means was, how to support developers if I pirate their stuff.

@saffire and owly, seem sensible. I was having doubts on the dvd since as opposed to streaming, dvd requires all those box, and cds, and paper images whatnot.
Also, thanks for the insightful article, it seems anime industry takes some bigger stabs than gaming, where after making animes, hopes of recuperating profit is through the anime's merchandise.. Not to mention the absurd notion of having to pay tv station to air animes :v ??

@nbhahn Thanks
@luffy Eh, I'm still another parasite to the industry.

@yuna Nah I'm not in US, but veeery close to that country. So Hulu won't work, Crunchroll was on my list of means. I haven't done thorough research on the site, but how good is it in terms of video quality, and fansubs(with those extra notes and after-credit notes). I just realized funimation probably won't have fansubbed animes which sometimes offer much more depth.
And I oppose Starbucks :V. Ad what's R1?

That was me. Sorry about that. When you first made the thread you actually spelled it "ilegit," and I didn't know if that was a typo or not. Then I read your post where you said you "obtained" Shiki through illegit means and thought you were saying something along the lines of "I downloaded this series, but still want to support the creators/developers. What can I do to help," so I kept it saying "illegit" thinking you meant "how can I be illegit but still support?" Anyway, I'll change it to "legit." My bad.

Also, this will explain R1.

you want to really help the actual artists send a check directly to the production house in the name of whichever artist you find most appealing. or to the producers/production studio directly.

you don't need to buy the DVD if you don't want to.

besides you can write a letter with the check which explains why you like they're work and want to support it. (don't worry about language most places have at least one translator. just use real words not slang)
