Wonder if a lack of English dub being listed implies that Disney will be releasing this title in N.A. I haven't seen any articles or news announcements indicating who has the N.A. licence, but I'm assuming Disney because of the past Ghibli titles they've released and also because Disney is releasing it in Japan.

I wonder if they'll license it but not release it to theaters. They probably won't be able to market it under their typical "happy kids and fairy tales" like they can with other Ghibli titles, so it's probably more Only Yesterday or Ocean Waves in that regard. Maybe they will put it to theaters and treat it as a more mature film? Who knows.

Well, it's very rare for an English dub for a Ghibli property to be out this early, and it usually makes it's debut on a NA release. This is for a Japanese release. Disney's release might be a limited theatrical run followed by a wide DVD/Blu-ray release.

How is this the first that I've heard of this new Ghibli movie?

If it's sub-only and NOT a Criterion or Kino release, it's pretty much DOA as far as the North American home video market is concerned. Sad but true over 90% of the time.
There have been experiments done with sub-only releases of anime features by larger licensors but time and again, they're way outsold by hybrid releases with localized dubs. I know both Sony (Millennium Actress) and DreamWorks (Ghost in the Shell 2) did their sub-only DVD releases but the sales must not have been very good. Millennium Actress is long out-of-print in the States and DW dropped their option on GitS 2 which was released with a dub by Manga if I'm not mistaken.
Most people do NOT want to read subs when they're watching a film. That's true worldwide just as it is in the US. That's why every country that has a film industry does localizing/dubbing for the most internationally popular films. The extra ticket and home video sales justify the dubbing costs.
I'd start saving up if you're really interested in the film and import the Blu ray when the release date comes up. Look for good deals from reliable import shops/distributors. You can probably save up to $20 on release day if you don't buy it from the first webstore that announces they have it. Sometimes you can get amazing deals from the legitimate Hong Kong sellers, too.
I saved something like at least $40 not too long ago buying the first hybrid PS3 Macross Frontier movie Blu ray from a Hong Kong vendor instead of going through Japanese sites or even video game sites. It pays to be patient and just look around.
I can tell you one thing, though.... You will almost certainly NOT find the best deals on Amazon.com... The Amazon.com marketplace is notorious for price-gouging on both out-of-print DVDs (the anime DVD mark-ups are ridiculous!) as well as selling bootlegs. You'd be better off looking on e-Bay in all honesty.

What English dub? There's Japanese, French, Korean, Cantonese, and Mandarin. No English, yet.

Minus Nordic countries and the Netherlands. You won't find any Steven Spielberg movies with a Finnish dub, except E.T,'s Special Edition, mandated by the American licensor. Only kids' movies are dubbed in Finland and even those have usually a subtitled option even in the theatre.

Yep. The english dub hasn't even been made (yet). It's WAY too early to speculate on anything.
I don't think this film is as hard to deal with as Only Yesterday (saw it again last night in Toronto. Keeps getting better every time I watch it) but its themes are a little less kid-friendly than Whisper of the Heart, too.
My guess is it gets released in 20 theatres (like Earthsea) and goes straight to video after.

This is for the Japanese release, not the USA/Canada or European release.
All of the Japanese Ghibli releases have English, and other, subtitles. Including the live action documentaries, the Ghibli Short Short Special (a collection of anime shorts), Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday.

I love Ghibli's BD releases. Because like their DVD ones before they provide English sub (and dub sometimes too) which is good enough for me to import it.
I watched the movie in theater during my trip to Japan back in August 2011, and it was surly more like Goro Miyazaki father's works than the previous one Gedo Senki.

Probably because it's directed by Miyazaki Jr.

Point taken, but the reason people are commenting on it now is hope for a North American release. I'm just saying don't count on it.
Only Yesterday was aired on TCM roughly a decade ago (2005, I think...). Hasn't had a Region 1 DVD release YET... Don't think it will happen, either.
The issue with DVD restrictions still exists. You get the DVD R2 release you find out it doesn't work in the standalone player or Blu ray player and you have to use software to break the region coding on your computer. It's a pain-in-the-ass. That's the reason I never bothered with R2 DVD's in addition to the lack of subtitles, let alone dubs, on 98% of the Japanese releases. They're not big on bending over backwards to accommodate everybody in most countries, let alone the Asian sphere.
I'll wait for the Blu ray releases thank you very much if they happen and I actually want the movies that much to pay an extra $50-$60 for the privilege.
I just think for most North American fans paying an extra $50-$60 for even the Blu ray disc -- which doesn't have the stupid region coding issue that most R2 DVD's do -- isn't worth it.
A huge reason why subtitles exist on the Ghibli DVD's and Blu rays is to accommodate ESL classes in Japan. These are probably the most popular animated films worldwide (aside from older Disney classics) and will engage most kids -- hence the English subtitles.
The same justification was used to dub the first Macross movie into English in the late 1980s. That dub came out hilariously bad but the acting quality wasn't the point. The producers knew the film was popular and dubbing it into English and providing subs for it, too, could enhance its money-making potential as well as providing another potential ESL teaching tool. Years later, we know that hasn't been the case. There were LD and VHS releases of the dubbed Macross film in Japan but the dub has been mostly MIA on official Japanese releases since the dawn of DVD!
Someone at Big West is also still pissed about the whole legal wrangling over both Robotech AND the licensing of the Macross movie in the US so it's likely the English dub track and subs produced have been locked up to actually hinder imports of the official Japanese home video releases into the US. Most fans won't bother with an $85 release that doesn't have at least English subs on it.

When did I say there was one out? I was basically stating why there currently isn't one on this release (in response to GhostShell's original comment about no English dub signifying a Disney license). I should've probably been more clear.
