I just bought the new Kanye West album; and I was listening to the 3rd track "Touch the Sky". All of a sudden, in the 3rd verse, I heard this:
Yes, yes, yes guess who's on third? Lupe still like Lupin the Third It seems like Kanye and guest Lupe Fiasco are two bits of an otaku. There's also another rapper named Jeru the Damaja that did a song called "Verses of Doom"; and one of the verses has this line: Still, I'm constantly beefin' like cowboys and Indians, Outlaw Star, like Gene Starwind kickin' that crazy shit like a soccer hooligan, Any thoughts? |

Ughh..........well maybe they grew up watching these shows? Anyways it wouldn't surprise me as anime seems to be seepin in through some cracks in the music industry. Some examples would be Interstella 5555 and it's involvement with Daft Punk. Theres the Gorillas and their anime style for their videos. Then another good example would be Linkin Park. In the video for "Somewhere I Belong" A Gundam model kit is shown. More recently in the "Breaking The Habit" video it was animated by the same team that did the animation sequence in Kill Bill vol.1. So if they were otakus I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I'm interested on how rappers and rap fans will react to the Tokyo Tribes anime once it's released by MTV. I'm a rap fan and this is one of my favorite mangas.

Lupin III and Outlaw Star have both aired on a major cable network in the U.S. It's not surprising that an artist may have even casually seen one of them and incorporated it into his or her work. Now, if it was some ultra-obscure reference from a show that will never see the light of day in the U.S., then we may have a real anime fan on our hands.

It hasn't been released yet. It'll be released here at the same time as Japan. MTV licensed it. The creator of the manga said in AI that he wants Dr. Dre to do the music.

It's fine if Kanye West wants to mention Lupin in his songs but you guys don't have to be immature and do the stereotypical omg rap sucks option. I guess you people think of rap as the stuff that is on TV and people think all rap is like that when it's not and are foolish.

As for J-rappers that can rap without the use of many curse words, you can't go wrong with Shing02 (is it Shing-zero-2 or Shing-oh-2?)[Official site: www.e22.com/shing02 & download Avatar (Four Heads Remix)]. He's probably one of the best rappers out there now. He does the theme for Champloo; if you don't know that by now.

It's fine to dislike rap--I know many people who do, and everyone's entitled to his or her own opinion. However, I find it discouraging that, on the many message boards that I've visited, the first mention of the words "rap" or "hip hop" triggers a deluge of replies saying "I hate rap" or "Rap and anime don't belong together" or what have you. Thus, the discussion, whatever its original intent, invariably degenerates into an argument about whether rap is good or bad. This, in turn, destroys the thread.
The person who created this topic asked us not what we think about rap in general (which would be off-topic, by the way), but what implications the infusion of rap music with anime references might have. For example, is this a sign that anime is becoming more mainstream, or is it simply being used by persons with their own agendas without regard for its inherent value? And yet, the mere fact that people would incorporate such references into their material--music, for instance--must therefore imply that the reference is something that would be fairly recognizable and appropriate for the general audience of that material. That sort of thing. By the way, I'm not trying to backseat-moderate--it would be pretty presumptuous for a newcomer such as myself to even attempt such a thing--but rather simply to avert a line of discussion that I have seen countless times in the past result in nothing more than off-topic bickering. |

The reason why a lot of rappers cuss and stuff is because that's how they would talk in the neighborhoods many of them come from. It's slang. I'm not trying to stereotype or anything like that. A lot of rappers also talk about their past, although it could get violent. Also, rappers like Public Enemy talk about issues such as racism.

People. Guess what? This thread has nothing to do with liking or disliking rap music. And after having to delete more than half of the thread, I don't want to hear anymore fighting about how badly a genre of music probably sucks or does not suck based on some horribly skewed/biased/ill-informed viewpoint. Are we clear? This thread is about hip hop recording artists and the possible influence anime has on their music, and that's what it is going to be about from here on out.
While I don't think this was directed so much at me as it probably was at CoolGAL and all that, I was the one to call out Kanye West specifically. To clarify, I do not dislike hip hop as a genre. Like every musical genre, it has its upsides and its downsides, and there are quite a few artists (many of whom I sadly don't know the names of; I've only heard them on a local college radio station) that I actually like quite a bit. It...just so happens that Kanye West is what I would consider one of those downsides is all. One I'd rather not acknowledge as associating himself with one of the greatest anime franchises of all time.

Well, aren't some of the rappers who contributed music in Champloo American? I read about it in the AS website when it was first announced that they were gonna show it.
