Wow, this review pretty much speaks the opposite of what other reviewers think of their favorite. The last line was quite unexpected. However, it is interesting to see an inverted take while comparing these two titles.
Well, I prefer Space Pirates to this show though mostly because I'm actually starting to like Marika and her levelheadedness. Marika's split-second decision making skills far outweigh Madoka's unreasonable spunk and simplicity. Also, has anyone noticed that a blonde loli appears in episode 8 of both Space pirates and Lagrange? I hope Sato isn't mixing the two up because this blatant parallel makes you wonder what he's thinking. It doesn't seem like a mere coincidence. |

Carl is hardly the first person I've heard saying that Lagrange is trending positive while BSP is trending negative (and I flat-out disagree with the latter assertion, but that's beside the point here), so here's the question for fans of this series: at what point does it actually start getting good? Although episode 2 was better than the very disappointing episode 1, those two together did not even come close to convincing me that the series was good enough (or at the very least, not cliche-ridden enough) to be worth following. Or is this a case where the whole thing is unlikely to work for me if I didn't find at least something appealing about the first two episodes?

Great review. I personally perfer this over the Morestu Pirates that's streaming atm on CR. I watched about 2 episodes and put it "on-hold" as I've heard from a live show discussion that there were alot more talk than action going on. That's definitely a turn-off for me imo.
As for Rinne no Lagrange, the review summed it up pretty damn well. There is fan service that is tasteful (I hope  ), good animation, a powerful soundtrack, and great mecha action. The series changes tones from comedy, to sorrow, to friendship, and sometimes a bit of implied yuri. Given that there is a 2nd season soon, it's just calm before the storm when this series seriously get into business.
I haven't gotten to this episode for Morestu Pirates yet but that made me lol. Would be even more interesting if they decide some sort of crossover. And back to the review again, I agree with nearly all the scores although it's hard to say about the story right now. It isn't my top 5 so far this year or this season but still enjoyable to watch. I hope it will eventually enter my top 5 favorite this year in the future. Anyways, great series and review

There is a huge disparity between the sepia colored scenes of the past and the present in Lagrange. The scenes depicted in the past are actually interesting and underline the seriousness of this interplanetary war. The present does the opposite by undermining the seriousness and indulges in frolicking and fanservice (btw that loli gropes Madoka's breast for no apparent reason). It is difficult to take this show seriously. It has all the elements of mystery but it is far from intriguing. So in short, Key, you won't find it appealing even after the two episodes because it doesn't get better. It might get better. It does have the faint potential but I'm not holding my breath. |

I think its gotten incrementally better, mainly by adding a little more background like Carl said in his review, but not a whole lot better.
I'm not crazy about the shifts in tone in the series. I think episode 7(?) we had this look into a dark past (serious, sobering stuff), mixed with eel/tentacle fan service, power of friendship and bonding thru nakedness. For me the wacky stuff took away from the serious background stuff that made some of the alien characters a little more complex. Is it better than Mouretsu Pirates right now? I'd say no. Is it a lot worse than Pirates, nah. I feel they both have their positives, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by both shows. They are both just kinda of ok at this moment for me. I've put both shows on hold until I hear something stronger about them. |

Probably. I started out liking it, and think it continually improves--but if you weren't interested from the beginning, I doubt that opinion is going to change. I don't know if you've seen Bamboo's Lagrange reviews in The Stream, but given that you both had a similar take on the first episodes, I think you'd agree with her perspective. Having said that, I get the feeling affairs are going to start intensifying over the next couple weeks, culminating in a climactic cour finale. This could be a very different show come Summer. As for the loli trend: funny enough, while I haven't been watching BSP, I did make time to catch up on a couple of episodes of EVOL after the latest episode of Lagrange... lo and behold, another loli Chairwoman! Dropped it after three episodes, just wasn't working for me. Too little was explained; I had no idea why they were fighting in the first place, not a clue. The characters were rather meh; didn't care about any of them. The lead female - Madoka, was it? - was like a Mary Sue, she didn't seem to have any real weaknesses or be at all interesting. Visuals were nice, especially of the Vox, but I can't say I was actually impressed by the machines themselves. The battle choreography was nothing to write home about.
This show may indeed get better. English Wikipedia is suggesting that it will run for two cour, which is enough time to expand the setting and explore the characters. But when I hear about the 'eel scene', not to mention other fanservice elements, I do feel justified in being a tad dubious. If the show improves and people let me know, then I may give it another shot. But unless that happens, I will have nothing further to do with it. |

I enjoyed the show from the very first and feel it has only gotten better for the reasons Carl outlined in his review. However, if you didn't find anything appealing about the first two episodes at all, I am far from confident that pressing on is going to change your mind to any significant degree. I think you posted not too long ago that your anime viewing time is somewhat limited these days so I'd say you are probably better off saving your time for something that has a higher probability of being enjoyable to you. As for myself, I like both Lagrange and BSP, but I find the former consistently more fun and less draggy in places. |

I've only watched the first episode, but it was enough to put me off this series forever. I suppose the reviewer and I have very different definitions of tasteful.

Yeah, if the level of fan service in Lagrange disturbs you, be sure to seek out those shows that have absolutely zero since clearly you can't handle much. I recommend Beast Player Erin to you. It's a fine series ... 50 nice episodes where you won't have to be troubled by even a scintilla of sexuality. Happy days! |

I always get the feeling from reading comments to reviews like this that people are very temperamental about their anime and will drop anything on a dime. That's always been weird to me as I feel I must either have no taste at all or just a very high tolerance to cliche and mediocrity. The way both this and Pirates are headed, I wouldn't be surprised if Lagrange does end up the more interesting anime; especially when we already know season two is scheduled for the Summer.

That's not me. My drop rate is low, somewhere in the vicinity of 10%. Recently I've even been sticking with shows I should've shrugged off, in retrospect; Star Driver, AnoHana (to dtm and other AnoHana fans: I am merely opining, not trying to be inflammatory), Infinite Stratos, and Guilty Crown being the principle offenders--so I'd say I've got high tolerance for mediocrity and cliches, too. To be clear, I think Lagrange is a middle-of-the-pack show so far. I can pretty easily enjoy it, but that's about it. |
