Favorite Openings: Shiawase no Iro from Ah My Goddess! season 2. I love the use of bagpipes and the heart-warming feeling it gives. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqvo0HpBzyk Life Goes On from Antique Bakery. This is a catchy and fun song, and every time I hear it I really really want some cake (If you watch the series you'll understand...) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fp2fOrMgEY The song from the Clover special by CLAMP, but I can't find the name anywhere. This song really touched me. The way it's sung is amazing, it reflects Suu's desperate loneliness and perfectly portrays Kazuhiko's and Suu's despair. The singer's voice is so full of emotion that you can feel it in every word she sings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01xbvbbSyvc Favorite Closers: Come from Inuyasha is a great song. My favorite ending song from Inuyasha was always Every Heart until I heard Come, but I still love both of them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OA8LITytnlA Meikyuu no Lovers, the second ending of Detective Conan is an awesome song. Fast-paced, gets your heart pumping, and reflects the show masterfully at that point in the series. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6Mi7hMtNPs Natsu Yuzora from the first season of Natsume Yuujincho. I was surprised at how much I love this since it's a slower song, but the way it flows is beautiful, relaxing and peaceful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_FF1n54iHg&list=FLpui1wwixoPktOa9KJsqyPw&index=17 |

These are songs that I've seen performed live:
OP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbj0XOiK33c God Only Knows ~Shuuseki Kairo no Yume Tabibito~ / ELISA (The World God Only Knows OP) A lovely, wispy, uplifting feel to this song. ED: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_Npgd6_Hpk Magia / Kalafina (Puella Magi Madoka Magica ED) Very hypnotic! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy-n5NKlUwk Mou Nani mo Kowakunai, Kowaku wa Nai / Chiaki Ishikawa (Mobile Suit Gundam 00 ED) Amongst all the performances I heard that weekend (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animelo_Summer_Live#Set_List_9 for the full list), this one cut right through to one's heart. |

My favorite opening song is "Morning Grace" from "Princess Tutu. I think it fits with the series very well, the theme of the show is classical ballet, and the song sounds so sad, like what happens in the series.

I don't know if anyone has ever heard the Godiego version of the Galaxy Express 999 opening song, which has both a Japanese and English adaptation. I think I've mentioned a few times that I'm a short wave listener. NHK World Radio Japan in Tokyo has played both versions at various points in their history. This is usually done when they want to punctuate a story having to do with the exploration of outer space. I guess someone certainly has a favorite opening song!

My favorite ending is the TV ending of Kodomo no Jikan and because of the show's subject matter/localization issues/everything else, I have no idea of how or why I first heard the song except that it was through youtube and it was years and years and years ago. Why do I love it so? Because it's Hanamaru Sensation {I won't link to anything, Everyone should know how youtube works by now}.
Also rans endings include Bakemonogatari, Baka and Test, all of the Koihime Musou endings and the second ending of Hanamaru Kindergarten which is the really strange epic one. I love plot/character specific endings. I list endings first because I like the openers to be more spontaneous; Don't make me explain it, I don't know why. And my favorite opener right now is Working, season 1: Someone {Wan Wan!}, Someone (Wan Wan!), Someone Else! {I know it's not really the title but it should be} The show doesn't have much to do with honest love stories but you'd never learn that from the opener. Also rans include the instrumental opener to Tenchi Muyo OVAs, the Melancholy of Haruhi Chan opener and pretty much any Shaft opener. Almost every Shaft opener. To list one, Maria Holic Alive; The Angel passing by one, Inoue style. |

I've already said here that I'm a sucker for a good pop punk song, so I really liked Gurren Lagann Ending 3 Minna no Piisu. That being said, I'm fully aware of the fact that the lyrics to it make little sense, but they still actually have a message that's more discernable than what one can read out of most anime ending themes.

I didn't know there was a thread such as this!
Anyway. To answer the question. I love anime theme songs in general so it will be very, very hard for me to pick a favorite. However, if I have to choose, I think I'll pick Yuzurenai Negai - Magic Knight Rayearth as my favorite opening and Hare Hare Yukai - The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as my favorite ending. I chose Yuzurenai Negai because it is the opening of my first favorite anime ever. Whenever I hear it, I immediately visualize Hikaru and the others standing on that cliff as seen in the accompanying video in the anime. I've listened to that song since third grade, and besides Voltes V, Dragonball and Fushigii Yuugi, it is one of my earliest recollection of anime music. I chose Hare Hare Yukai on the other hand because of (surprise!) the accompanying dance number. I guess had there been no dance number alongside the song I wouldn't have chosen it; I'd probably go for Shiawase no Niji - Gakuen Alice with its cute duck umbrella. However, the accompanying video of anime theme songs weigh a lot to me. As such, this is what I chose. Plus, Hare Hare Yukai is fun to sing along to, don't you think? These choices were simply the first titles to enter my head. It's really hard to pick an all time favorite. In terms of opening, I also consider Sobakasu - Rurouni Kenshin and Yakusoku wa Iranai - The Vision of Escaflowne as amazing themes. When it comes to ending themes, besides what I've mentioned, there's also Waltz - Honey and Clover as well as Life is Like a Boat - Bleach, which I really love. |
