Just watched first 20 minutes of the movie on [adult swim] great so far. Question is will I ruin the TV series if I watch the movie first?

No. I own both the movie and the series and even though I waited to watch the movie till I finished the series I found it didn't matter. Both include the same characters and same world but different events happen in both, go ahead and watch it, mine as well, its free.

Thanks vash.

So far it's been great, wanted to make sure the order didn't mater.

The bumps before/after commercials got me hooked Smile

It's more like InuYasha uses 85% of the Escaflowne VAs. Not uncommon, since they were both dubbed at the same place.

The movie was made 4 years after the end of the TV series. It is said (by the producer and director themselves) to be an "alternate story," of sorts.

As was mentioned, the movie retains all the characters and elements that make Escaflowne the anime franchise that it is.

Most people who have seen the series before the movie end up not liking it (the movie) because they expect it to be a sequel, which it is definitely not.

Just think of the movie as a stand alone story. And if you ever get to watch the series, rewatch the movie again, but remember to not join the two timelines. That way, you'll be able to enjoy them both for their respective merits Wink.

Both incarnations are good and worth watching but I prefered the series a lot more. Longer, more action, more character development etc.

One thing that helped me appreciate the movie much more than I initially did was coming across this website:

http://www.melted-dreams.net/escamovie/index.html

..which does a great job explaining the psychological symbolism in the film.

Oh wow. I never knew that the VAs for Sango and Miroku from Inuyasha were the same for Hitomi and Van from escaflowne. That's interesting, I learn a new thing everyday.

The only edit I noticed was the removal of at least half of the end credits - and, of course, the addition of the commercial breaks. I was fairly impressed that they let the last 20 minutes or so play out without a break.

And I had thought the movie used more of the series OST than a single cut, but I guess not. Hmmm; maybe I'll have to get the movie soundtrack now, too.

Thats true if you actually take the Escaflowne as a movie and not a sequel it is a whole lot better for those whove seen the series. I forgot it was gonna be on it just started again i guess. Thats cool its not edited I didn't believe the quote prior to this one because escaflowne movie is gory. I love when he gets in Escaflowne. Well I havnt seen X in a while so I guess Ill watch that movie instead considering I've seen this movie too many times over a year ago.

I saw the movie months before I saw the series, and it didn't "ruin" anything for me. It does make some changes to the characters and suffers from "We need to cram a 26-episode story into 2 hours" syndrome, but it works well enough as a standalone, alternate version.

And incidentally, there's a parody dub project in progress involving this movie--you can check out escadub.uncreativity.com for details.

The soundtrak is especially good. I'm not sure if you already have the movie, but if you want to get a nice little package, look into purchasing this. It's worth every penny, especially for that price. I found the extras disc to be very helpful in separating the series and movie and as a nice insight on the production crew's thoughts of the overall franchise.

Nah, I got the movie shortly after it first came out so I'll have to buy it separately. Unlike the series OST (which I had to find at a convention with import dealers), the movie OST is available in the States, so it shouldn't be hard to find. (Never understood why the series OST never got released over here, since it's one of the all-time best anime OSTs. It's one of the most-played titles in my CD collection.)

I've tried on two occasions to watch this movie, and both times, I couldn't force myself to keep watching for more than a few minutes.
