I know it's a great reference and all, but why make a news article out of this? Obviously you're not going to when other shows make big references, like Strike Witches doing Gunbuster, so why single this one in particular out? References and homages are a near constant thing in anime. Hell, most of Gintama is based around the idea.

Wow, totally did not pick up on that. The Akira reference I usually pick up on is the trailing lights one, but SHAFT did a really good job here with their attention to detail.

Yeah, I picked up on this one.
It's not a news article, it's an interest piece. |

1. It's an interest article 2. "I don't find this particular thing remarkable, that means nobody else will either". Never try to find work as a news editor, you wouldn't be good at it. |

Okay, so why pick this one up as an interest piece? Is it because of Akira, because Shinbo/Nisioisin shows sell gangbusters, combination of the two? Does it set a precedence in what other references will be reported on [for interest], or just lone one? Call me crazy, but most of these interest pieces seem completely arbitrary.

I totally agree with walw6pK4Alo's opinion though Zac. Every year, tens of anime series reference classic shows/movies and it's the first time I read such a thing on ANN (but maybe I didn't see the other news). If this is a piece of interest, why not writing about Mouretsu Pirates referencing Harlock in the OP and several other instances in the first three episodes for example ? Don't get me wrong, it's interesting to me and I enjoy seeing theses references, it's just that I don't think it belongs in the news of ANN.

I think the reason the news writer thought this one was worth an article was because it's a reference to such a classic work that practically any anime fan can look at and smile. Heck I giggled at it since it was so nicely done and I really don't like the -monogatari series, thanks for posting about it!

People complaining for the sake of complaining.
Get the hell over it and enjoy the article! Akira's legacy continues to strive!I wish Katsuhiro Otomo would direct another film soon!Anime needs his presence! |

Because it is an interesting tidbit? I thought it was cool. Seriously, why are you complaining? You can choose to, I don't know, ignore it if you don't like it? Not like we get news/interest articles by the hundreds per day.

Untrue. Most anime fans (at least in America) have never seen Akira. Heard of it, probably...but seen it? Most have not.
I don't see him as complaining. He was simply curious as to why this specific one was chosen but many others over the years completely ignored. My opinion is it's because of how overrated and over-hyped the "Gatari" franchise is, so they picked it up. Similiar to how last year ANN posted about some visual kei bands giving back to the victims of the earthquake, yet when I emailed about Bump of Chicken (one of the best selling bands Japan) having 100% proceeds of a CD back then go to victims..they never said a word about it. ANN just chooses what they feel would fit best with their audience...and that just happens to be things related to over-hyped, because...obviously they're hyped so people know about it and can relate better. |

I'd have to question how you came about this particular bit of info. |

Go to an anime convention, talk to every single person you meet, keep a tally. That'll show you how popular old anime is to newer/younger fans, regardless of how big it use to be. |

Then I would have to assume those newer/younger fans are now the majority of the anime fandom. Have veteran/older fans just died off? But anyway I am not making any claims to the majority, for those that are I would love to see their proof and how they obtained it. |

I will be honest and say I completely missed this homage. It has been ages since I last saw Akira, let alone had any thoughts or words about it.
I really should pick up a Blu-ray copy... So, thank you ANN for this article. |
