I've watched the NEW version of the thing quite recently *I bought it actually... after renting it and liking it a lot, ADV released a new version with all 3 episodes on one DVD*

It's pretty great, like a post-apocalyptic BRUCE LEE movie

It has a lot of manliness, a hot female lead and a very deep story amidst all the extremely outlandish and laughable violence and the cheese

... It has a lot of nifty messages too *like said BRUCE LEE movies*

And somehow, everytime KENSHIRO opens his mouth, sometihng extremely manly manages to come out... I thought HARLOCK was Badass, but man, this guy rocks

The thing has the best lines, like:

"Don't even try to fight anymore, because you're already dead"

or

"I see the star of your death shining in the black void of the night"

... or something like that

THIS has been my first experience with the series as a whole though and it ROCKS

But I was wondering how it fairs with fans of the older stuff

So yeah, what say you?

I loved The Old Fist Of The North Star but wasnt too fond of the new one. The CG scenes dont really interest me and tend to bore me and they seem out of place but the action and story i can bare with. I prefer the old fist of the north star, to me its a classic and one of the first trully violent anime I was exposed to. I havnt seen all of the New Fist Of The North Star though I only saw the first volume and i wasnt interested in the next 2 because first it was expensive and second i wasnt too fond of it. I might pick it up at its cheap price but Im hoping the next 2 hours are better than the first. I like the older Fist better.

Personally, I like the old series a bit more. I've only seen about 14 or 15 of the episodes of the original TV series but, it's really cool. Sure, the animation isn't anything special at all (and is sometimes downright ugly at times) but, the storyline is great and the action is too. The only other strike against the original TV series is that all the blood is colored white/silverish or black...only rarely is the blood ever colored red. I'm not sure if they changed that in later episodes or not but, yeah, it's discolored. The original movie however, is off the hook. The animation is sweet, the character designs are great and the violence is all there in it's original red bloody goodness...heheh. If you get a chance, see if you can't download a subtitled copy of the original film since it's not available out here in any format anymore after Streamline Pictures bit the dust. Plus, the acting in the english version is GARBAGE.

I haven't seen the new FOTNS but I really liked the original. I thought of it as Bruce Lee meets Mad Max.

That's what I was thinking

Anyway, the violence was fun, but I was more interested in the cheese and the main character *and his excellent one-liners*

... well, the story which was rather good too considering, you know, using religion to deceive people and stuff

Although, yeah, the animation was out of place even if some of the art was pretty cool *like when people would walk on surfaces or something*

But the fight scene in the third episode was pretty awesome

Well, good to know people replied

I think all of the Fist of the North Star franchise is good. The old series is a classic and a staple in anime history and I have loved it ever since I first caught it when it use to air on Showtime a couple of years ago. And the new version is a good extension, since I think people have always wanted to see FOTNS with a fresher animation style.

And with the New movies and new OVA coming out, I'll be satisfied with my FOTNS craving for awhile.

Can anyone explain why Akira Kamiya could not reprise the role of Kenshiro?
