This show is WEAK. It has a poorly written story, cheaply animated action sequences, and very generic comedy with little to no effort.

I saw the first episode in English at a friend's house and was ready to dismiss it already for the bad dubbing. After he mentioned it to me a few weeks later, I decided to download the series, and let me tell you.

Of all the few titles that I've actually downloaded and seen through to completion, this is the ONE & ONLY title I refuse to pay money for.

Not even the voices of Tomokazu Seki and Satsuki Yukino are enough to make up for the terrible, terrible production values of this series from its lame plot, to the shallow characters, to the half-baked, roody poo attempts of fan service.

The only thing that kept me from rating it any lower was the one episode where they spoofed Iron Chef for a little bit. But before, in between, and beyond that lies one of the worst anime I've seen, which are few in the first place.

If you want a GOOD high school fighting series, try Tenjou Tenge.

Deleted Kyio's opening post for being mindless drivel. Tony K.'s reply makes a better opening, so I'm keeping it open with that.

The first episode had a lot of promise with a pretty strong set up and flat out gorgeous animation...I saw it at Sakura Con in 2000 before it came out, but when I bought the DVD's I was kinda disappointed. The first episode was still really good and the next few weren't too bad but, then when it switched gears and completely forgot to animate half of it as well as forgot to continue the previous storyline, I kinda gave up on it. Too bad though...the character designs are really nice as well as the first episode having one of the coolest (as well as best animated) fight scenes I've ever seen in an anime.

I recommend that you read the manga instead, it doesn't go into the same uninteresting and ridiculous story the the anime does. The manga actually keeps it slightly interesting and the characters are explored a little deeper. I don't why they made the anime so much different then the manga.

DVD Times pretty much summed it up:

Quote:
Which is why I'm at a bit of a loss to explain where the magic has gone in this second DVD instalment. For a show that I really enjoyed the first four episodes of, why do these next three strike me as 'merely OK'? Naturally, I have my theories. Obviously, the first DVD got to play the 'introductory' card – you spend a lot of your time getting up to speed on the series and its lead cast, so it's an enthusiasm-building enterprise if the show is at all good. (And it is.) However, now that we know who all of the key players are, Real Bout High School needs to start addressing the meat of the story arc... and that's something I just did not see happening in the episodes on this disc. (In other words, at the end of Volume 2 we are more than halfway through the series and yet it doesn't really feel that way.)

For me, I actually got lost at DVD #2. And I still never finished it.

I pretty much felt that by DVD #2, they stuffed every concieveable Anime Cliche and went on that tangent. It's as if they dumped the story for no apaprent reason.

I picked up the box set including the soundtrack for 40 dollars and still felt ripped off. Theres a local bookstore who sells box sets for cheap they have GTO box sets for 40 as well and REIGN the conqueror for 30 dollars. But anyway if I get a box set i tend to watch it all before i decide wether its shelf worthy or to trade it in. I did think it had some good fighting, although rare, but i have to agree and say the rest was crap. When she ran crying after a scene, people whove seen it know when, she looks like she's moonwalking away. I've seen some horrible animation but come on, that made the running in GANTZ seem like light speed.

The only thing I really liked besides some fighting were the notes inside each DVD case. I´m not that smart when it comes to japanese culture and customs but the notes explained a whole lot.

So in short I spent 40 dollars on a series where the best part was the notes in the DVD case. Lucky for me I received 35 dollars store credit at suncoast for it so i saw it as a lesson which cost me 5 dollars. But I fell for it again when I got Gunparade March for only 15 but I got back 20 for it. In short I agree REAL BOUT HIGH SCHOOL does suck.

I actually own all 6 volumes of the manga, I just haven't read it besides Volume 1 and maybe 2...I can't remember...mainly because I have a bad habit of buying things and then getting into something completely different all of a sudden. I can't seem to keep my interests focused on one thing for too long. I'm on a huge American comic binge right now so, I'm not sure when I'll get to it but, thanks anyway for the suggestion. It'll more'n likely have to wait until I get through all of this DC Infinite Crisis stuff and all the old Marvel stuff I've been buying...especially Red Sonja. Awesome stuff. Sorry...going off on a tangent here...almost 3 am.
