Of course, and I was pointing out that "reverse importation fear" theory might slowly be falling apart. Of course, licensing anime is extremely complex and it's possible someone/company on the production committee is like "hold on, wait a second" while everyone else is like "eh...let them release it." |

For what its worth, the movie BD is coming out soon, and they might see a spike in sales for the older series when that comes out. I think they'd rather reap those sales themselves, instead of people importing the cheaper set.

Hmmm. I was only talking about the reverse importation concerns between NA and Japan, which is what has caused the situation the article covers. If you want to tie your point into my post then can you please tell me what are the prices like in Taiwan for BD anime?

Darn you, Sony! Darn you and your initial plan to streamline Blu-ray production by making the world's two largest home video markets the same region! |

Cheap, but not as cheap as the US since TW still does the singles route. An outlier is the Fate/Zero boxset that's pretty much the Japanese version imported (like what Aniplex USA is doing). For some of the newer stuff coming out (MSRP): Madoka vol. 1 - $800NTD which is roughly $27 for episode 1-3 Hidan no Aria/Infinite Stratos - $650NTD which is roughly $21 same release format as the Japanese version (so, typical 2 episodes per disc). The Nanoha regular edition movie cost $970NTD which is roughly ~$33. Even though for DVDs TW is Region 3, they are still much cheaper than the Japanese equivalent. I bought the Taiwan DVD release of OreImo and each volume (4 total) cost me like $20? I'm not saying reverse importation fear is dead, but I'm curious to see how things go this year as Taiwan releases more anime on BD. Unless, the Japanese fear R1 more because it's MUCH cheaper overall than a somewhat cheaper TW alternative.
Ah, that makes more sense then. I don't follow the series, so I didn't know a movie was coming out. |

The standard volume price seems to be $800 Taiwanese dollars... or about $27 USD at the current exchange rate. I'm not sure what the standard volume count is over there, but Blue Exorcist and Madoka Magica have three episodes per volume. That would put them roughly at what R1 prices were in the singles era. More expensive than current R1s, but still about 1/5th to 1/4th of paying the Japanese prices. And TW releases seem like they tend to come with a lot more extras than US releases. |

Isn't there a fairly large group of Japanese that use R1 releases to help learn English? If that was case, I could see why Japanese companies put more restrictions on US releases then Taiwan ones, because those usually only have Chinese subs.
But if that's not the case, Taiwan releases are still a hell of a lot cheaper than Japanese ones and no/less restrictions for them, which makes no sense from where I sit. |

Good point. But, at least for Funi BD releases (unless they have fixed it entirely), the subs, due to font and styling, are so hard to read even for English speakers! DVDs are fine due to the nice large yellow subs. |

This. I don't care about this particular title but for other titles I'd rather wait for proper releases (BDs, dubs, etc.) than get stuff faster (that goes for those stupid import-style sub-only releases of big properties too, except ofcourse for super niche shows that have no shot), especially if it's stupid reverse-importation fears in Japan causing them (hey old Japanese executive, maybe the Japanese consumers are trying to tell you you're prices are getting out of hand if they're resorting to imports of their own stuff? Not that it matters since you've been price gouging them for so long that their consumers clearly can't do anything about it anymore), but we all know that had they delayed it we'd hear non-stop BS from numerous people complaining about Funi's speed over things totally out of their control. It'd be cool if Funi could inform everyone of when they think the BD might be able to be released at least a little before this release comes out though so that people can make an informed decision about whether to wait or double-dip etc., but that's probably also not allowed since the Japanese consumers would read about it too, so they probably have to leave the date nebulous. Like the Mardock Scramble first movie I'm double-dipping on that Sentai had to delay the BD for. |

This will sound crazy considering how most Americans probably view Taiwan when compared to the US, but I don't think the US market is willing to pay Taiwan prices for anime. Their release format is almost identical to Japan but it's like $20-$30 per BD volume, making a 13 episode 6 volume release $120-$180. Maybe that increase in price combined with the idea that Americans just don't value anime is enough to warrant them getting it earlier than us. |

Somewhat of an off-topic, but semi-related question.
I'm somewhat new to the whole US BD/DVD scene as I usually just import straight from Japan if I have the cash. So, what is the deal with these 'combo/hybrid' box set things consisting of DVDs and BDs? Just hear me out. If I already have the capability to watch BDs, why would I want to watch the lower quality DVDs? And for those who can only watch DVDs, the BDs will be nothing more than useless extras. I'd prefer separate releases so I needn't pay for that extra DVD or BD discs... |

I viewed it as more of something for people who haven't upgraded to BD viewing capabilities. This way they can buy the combo pack and whenever they get around to getting a BD player, they don't have to rebuy in BD form. I don't mind them, although it's pretty useless for me since I have a BD player. It's not tacking that much extra cost on though, so doesn't bother me so much. |

And with this I cancelled my amazon preorder... -sigh- and here I was really looking forward to seeing season 2.
