Hi,

I am new to the forum, but I have been watching anime for about 3 years. I recently watched Koi Kaze, and I really liked it. It was my first "romance anime" to watch, and I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations of others that are worth checking out. Thank you.

i havnt seen many but i recommend chobits but make sure you get all seven volumes if you want closure. I've heard good things about ai yori aoshi but I've yet to see it but i plan to. stay far away from gunparade march i got it cause i thought it was gonna be action but it turned out being a weak love story. voices of a distant star, it made my sister cry, is pretty good but very short. i got the place promised in our early days but I've yet to see it but i heard its good but i dunno if it is romance. i dont think your supposed to ask for lists in this forum so ask about certain shows and your topic wont get locked.

Victorian Romance Emma is also a very good one although it's kinda subtle about things. Its basically about a maid who falls in love with someone from the upper class and of course, problems arise.

So if you're looking for a nice short romance series(hopefully a second series is going to be out sometime) Emma is a nice one to watch...

Mahoraba ~Heartful days~ is also pretty good. It's a comedy/romance series.

Where to begin some good ones are fruits basket, please teacher and please twins, love hina, chobits, mahoromatic, marmalade boy, hand maid may, strawberry eggs is great the end might make you cry though, and a ton more good ones. I say start out with please teacher and please twins or maybe fruits basket also depends on how much fan service you want. As far as fanservice goes i think mahormatic is probly close to even being soft core hentai

No need to worry; you haven't broken any forum rules as long as people explain their recommendations. These kind of requests do come up on a regular basis, however, so searching for older threads on the same subject before posting something is a good idea.

If you've seen Koi Kaze, then you've already seen the best; almost everything else is going to pale by comparison. Some romantic titles that are commonly highly-regarded (and available in the States!) are:

Saikano - Serious, tragic, sci fi-tinged series about two teens trying to fall in love despite the fact that the girl has been turned into an ultimate weapon and is thus gradually losing her humanity. Probably the best-written anime romance after Koi Kaze. (And sorry, but azzmonkey is just wrong about this one.)
Ai Yori Aoshi - One of the best "harem" romantic comedies out there, primarily because the two main characters (who have to pretend that they're not engaged or even romantically involved because of family complications) make such a perfect couple. The second season features even better graphics but is mostly filler.
Voices of a Distant Star - A short, melancholy sci-fi gem about two teen lovers trying to stay in contact with each other despite communications lags that eventually reach years in length. Much-beloved.
Oh! My Goddess - The TV series is coming soon, but the original OVA series about a young man who wishes for a goddess to be his girlfriend is still a widely-beloved classic amongst romantic comedies.
Visions of Escaflowne - Yes, it's a mecha series about a girl who travels to an alternate fantasy world, but it packs serious doses of romantic entanglements and is a favorite of many a long-time anime fan.
Steel Angel Kurumi - Cute, very funny, energetic harem series about a female combat android who falls madly in love with the boy whose accidental kiss awakens her, thus touching off a very complicated web of romantic entanglements. It does get pretty racy.
Midori Days - Despite some lag in the middle episodes, this recent series about a high school tough who wakes up one morning to discovers his right hand has turned into a girl is a solid and funny romantic story with a great ending.

Fruits Basket, which is basically a reverse harem series, is a name that frequently comes up when romantic titles are mentioned, though I've only seen a few episodes so I can't personally vouch for it yet. Kare Kano (aka His and Her Circumstances) also gets mentioned a lot, but I can't personally vouch for that one, either.

Someone else mentioned Mahoromatic, which is a great comedy/drama series but isn't exactly a romance. (And yes, it does have one of your heavier quotients of fan service.)

I wouldn't suggest avoiding it like the plague. In fact, I think Saikano is a very good show. Not only is it a wonderfull yet tragic romance, but also shows the horrible things that happen during a war. Yes, it's depressing at points, but it's deffinatley worth watching. I haven't seen Koi Kaze (although I really want to), but it seems as though it's not just some kiddy romantic comedy show. Well, neither is Saikano. I'd figure that because of this, the fanbase of these two shows would have some heavy overlap.

One unmentioned show is Kare Kano / His and Hers Circumstances. Although more of a teeny-romantic comedy, it's still one of my favorites (then again, it IS Gainax). It is very funny and has a great story.

Another one I've been following lately is Honey and Clover. I'm absolutely loving this show! The characters and situations are both hilarious and touching. I may be the only one, but to me, this show seems like the spiritual successor to Kare Kano/His and Hers.

Two which have been missed are Kanon and Air.

Kanon is the more traditional story of the two, while Air features both an excellent story and some of the best animation ever.

The only drawback - They're highly unlikely to be licenced outside of Japan <_<

Don't forget Full Moon wo Sagashite. THough it may be portrayed as an anime about a dying girl pursuing her life-long dream, it's still a romance in a sense, and a very sweet one at that (forget the age difference).

Also, Kodocha is worth mentioning, though the romance angle doesn't enter the scene until much later....that is, if the anime stuck to the manga in decent fashion (haven't seen beyond ep 28 in the series).

Never saw Kanon, but heard good things. Air, though, I did see, but I wouldn't call it a romance show. I mean, who falls in love? Where are the couples? Show me 1 love triangle! Seriously, not a bad show, but not really a romance show. And probably not what the OP is looking for.
Don't let that stop you from checking it out, though.

No one said Gravitation yet, so I'll throw it out. It's one charming and hilarious romantic comedy. It's still worth seeing even if you're not big on the idea of two guys dating. I figure atypical romance setups shouldn't be too much a problem having seen Koi Kaze. Maison Ikkoku is a great one as well, despite being a bit lengthy, and at times, a bit frustrating. The comedy is sharp, and the characters are wonderful, so they definitely make for some great moments throughout the run of the series.

If we're naming anime that isn't licensed yet, I want to add Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, as a solid romance series about keeping past romances alive for the sake of another despite being involved in new ones. I'd definitely say it's worth checking into.

I found it very difficult to recommend additional ones not listed yet. Great job, guys. :thumb:

Radicalmichael, may I ask which one (or both) do you prefer: romantic comedy or romantic drama/tragedy? There are much less romantic drama/tragedies out there, but while many, if not most, romantic comedies are filled with fan service and other types of fillers, the few drama/tragedies (KoiKaze, KimiNozo, SaiKano, and, ah, Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu) have higher standards in average. Note that I said "in average."

Strange enough, no one has mentioned two Ghibli's movies: Ocean Waves and Whisper of the Heart, plus a rather rarely heard one: Kita e ~Diamond Dust Drops~. While the former two have been discussed extensively (see Nausicaa.net for details -- much better than what I could have written), Kita e contains stories of six different girls (it was adapted from a dating sim game, after all); although most stories involve romantic elements, it's more about their character developments, particularly what they have learned from their love lives.

Not even he word "jubilant" was enough when we fans in Taiwan saw this (pre-ordered, of course).
