I've just started getting into the robotech series I've seen the macross arc and new generation arc all i need is the middle robotech masters arc. I've seen all of the original gundam. i was just wondering which came first? i like the action in gundam a whole lot more but robotech is really good too. they both even have characters that are identical. do they have similar character designers or just coinsidense or is it rip-off? im also wondering which one you guys enjoy more? Gundam or Robotech?

Gundam, by 3 years. It came out in 1979. Macross aired in 1982.
And which characters are identical? I can't think of any off the top of my head. |

I think in robotech his name was MAX the guy in the blue veritech who ends up spoiler[marrying the zentraedi female spy] in the first couple episodes of gundam there is a guy who looks just like him who is a white base crew member. you still didn't say which one you liked more or if you liked either one at all.

You know, you could have easily found production dates and character designer information in ANN's Encyclopedia section in all of a minute of looking.

Well, the thing with Robotech is that it was an American production made by splicing three completely unrelated Japanese anime together. It was made by editing and recombining Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber Mospaeda, and Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross into a single plotline, which is probably why it has more of an "American feel" to it.

i did like robotech so would you say the original versions of the three arcs are better than "Robotech" the 85 episode series? my favorite arc was the macross arc so is super dimensional fortress macross better than the robotech version or is it the same? sorry about the run-on.

Personally, I really, really enjoyed Macross, though it's been so long since I last saw Robotech that for me to compare the two would be really unfair. I also have not seen Mospaeda or Southern Cross at all, so I cannot comment on them, either.

I've seen Robotech and all of its components in their original Japanese form, and I have to say that I enjoyed them all quite a bit. As for how they compare...it's kind of hard to say because my opinion is likely quite different from yours. Rent them sometime and see for yourself how you like them.

i have to say i did like robotech so i might just pick up the other three. one last thing though ..... I've seen macross and new generation of robotech and i still cant figure out what protoculture is and how its made. ANN has a protoculture ¨link¨ but i dont get it its a link for some magazine but well i know that in new generation they use protoculture to power their cyclone bikes and veritech fighters so i think its some kind of energy but i still dont know how its made.

Well, in the original Macross, spoiler[protoculture isn't something that's made. Rather, it is the proto-culture. The culture from which the earthlings, Zentraedi, and whatever others descended from. Protoculture is not a part of the original Southern Cross or Mospeada series.] I can't tell you how it's made in Robotech though, since I've never seen it.

A google search would have provided plenty of results.
Anyway, in Robotech protoculture is an energy source somehow derived from the flower of life. It was discovered by the Robotech Master known as Zor after his involvement with the Invid queen. (She loved him, hence her refashioning of herself into some more humanoid.) I'm not too sure about the process of converting the flowers to energy, but that's where it comes from. The Robotech novels go more into depth with protoculture and how it works, so looking there might help. Then again, as time has passed, they've been considered less and less official by fandom and Harmony Gold. Still gives you a better idea of things than the TV series. |

Protoculture Addicts is an anime magazine. Then again, one can easily mistake it for a Robotech magazine. Or a Robotech DRUG magazine. |

Technically you're wrong. Gundam beat the VALKYRIES by 3 years. The fighter planes are only called Veritechs in Robotech, which came in 1985. Sorry, I'm just being technical. And to answer your question: Sleggar Law and Roy Focker/Fokker. |
