I was just checking out Production IG's website and they discussed GITS: SAC 2nd Gig. Kamiyama even had a five part interview on there about his work on 2nd Gig.
According to the website, Mamoru Oshii worked with Kamiyama on 2nd Gig. Kamiyama was apparently also concerned that his series continued to do justice to Shirow's work. Now, I'm curious who has what rights to the series and what does that get them? For instance, since Shirow invented the characters could he put his foot down and get Production IG to stop production if they took his characters in a direction he didn't approve of? Or did he completely sell rights to the story to Production IG? From reading a little of the stuff on the website it almost seemed as though Oshii considered GITS to be HIS and that he was almost supervising 2nd Gig. So, in a room with Kamiyama and Oshii creating stories based on Shirow's concept, who is in charge? |

From what I remember, OSHII and SHIROW completely entrusted the serires into KAMIYAMA's hands *Errr... SHIROW initially entrusted his story into OSHII's hands and son on... etc. etc. etc.*
But I don't really know for sure, in any event, I'd like to know more about this too But when you look at it, all 3 versions are very different |

Since everything GitS is based on Masamune Shirow's manga, I believe that he still would maintain the rights to everything dealing with it. On the first season DVDs, he's listed under Production Advisor.
On Production IG's 2nd GIG Staff/Cast Page, Mamoru Oshii is listed under "Story Concept" for 2nd Gig. As they were in the first season, Shirow is listed under Original Work/Collaboration. Kenji Kamiyama is listed under Director and Story Organization. It looks like it's a joint venture between Shirow and Production IG so they must have good lenghty contract stipulating that the studio can be creative, but Shirow probably has the final say on everything. Of course, Shirow can't really stop production now since the series ended in Japan this past January. |
