As the subject states, I am wondering which one would be good one. Yeah, I just started watching Japanese anime with english subtitle and found it much better than American revised anime. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank
![]() For info, I saw Ninja scroll, spirit away, bootleg toyko mew mew, One Piece(currently watching), and few I cant remember names. |

I'll second Cowboy Bebop, but suggest watching the dub version of it, very well done. |

Let me clarify. I meant the english dubbed version, as opposed to the japanese dubbed version, subtitled in english. The DVDs are all uncut, and include both versions. |

Take a look at Cookie's list and the rating page.
With only four titles, it's hard to determine a genre for you...however, assuming you are a male in late teen/early 20s, you can start with popular shounen titles, e.g. InuYasha, Naruto, or Fullmetal Alchemist. |

For beginners, I think movies would be the best option. IT allows them to sample anime, but not have to sit through an entire series, which could come later.
With that said, I think Miyazaki Movies would be a good start. Laputa and Kiki's Delivery Service for the younger audience. Princess Mononoke for the pre-teen to teen with some kind of explanation behind it (seeing as how it is hard to get first time around; American audiences never got it . . . so embarassed). Also, Voices of a Distant Star would deliver a good narative and animation. And the ROD OAV would be a great way to show some really cool concepts and imagination. For a more mature POV, I think Grave of the Fireflies is a really excellent example of what anime embodies that American animation doesn't . . . pure, heart-wretching emotion (save some Disney exceptions, i.e. Bambi). Also, Ghost in the Shell because its story and animation are still top quality in my book. |

I guess Cowboy Bebop is probably a very good beginner series but I thought it was nothing amazing when I watched it, having seen a lot of much better and more substantial anime. Anyway, it was an okay series and I can't really imagine anyone really hating it. It's very easy to watch.
Also, if you like fantasy, you'll probably like Scrapped Princess, although I haven't watched past the first episode myself, so I can't give you my own opinion. I hear that it is also a very good series for people starting out with anime. This is a series that I am also currently collecting. |

For action:
R.O.D. OVA - all episodes in 1 DVD. Full stylish actions in this movie and see the power of papers. To be hooked: Noir - about 2 girl assasins with stylish killing sequences. Some people like this series but some people hate it. To me, I was hooked after the 1st episode and finished all 7 DVD's non-stop. To feel sad: Grave of the fireflies. Depends on the person. Most people feel sad but some people feel bored. For family friendly: All Mayazaki's movies. For Adults: Kite standard or uncut version - warning, violence and explicit sexual contents (uncut version only) but the strong point of this movie is the action - the bullets and grenades used in this movie will make your jaw drop. |

The first three shows I showed to my friend to get him into anime were Cowboy Bebop (mostly the dub version), Scrapped Princess, (sub only) and Full Metal Panic (mix of dub/sub). Some other good shows would be Outlaw Star, Last Exile, and Escaflowne.
There's almost a pattern in recommendations in posts like these. . . the better shows for beginners seem to be more action-oriented and less "Japanese." I put "Japanese" in quotation marks because I mean shows that rely on more knowledge of Japanese culture (especially all the high school rites and shenannigans) and/or the anime canon (parody shows like Excel Saga and Comic Party). Note that many of the shows listed have settings outside Japan and Western-style names. |

Age matters a lot. I usually hear that a lot of people start with shonen animes like DBZ because they were exposed to anime at a young age (myself included). That also doesn't mean that shonen animes are for kids either. And anime works like movies, there are people that like action, comedy, or drama. I usually look at reviews before I look at the anime but sometimes it worsens the experience than if you just get something and see for yourself if you like it.
