I'm glad. People have made some great arguments as to why Madoka is scifi..but when you have a single element that isn't , then it's fantasy in my book. So I'm glad Madoka didn't win.

i must confess i haven't watched Madoka but from what i understand it's a more serious take on the magic girl genre, in which case why was it in the running for this award? surely its a fantasy series, not a sci-fi series?

Madoka does have SF elements such as spoiler[time travel] and spoiler[aliens] but I don't think of it particularly as an SF series. Its dominant characteristic is magic, so the fantasy label does seem more appropriate.

I never heard of Karyu no Miya. When I googled it the first 4 link on the page was for this article.
I think Karyu no Miya won because it was a obscure title. But I don't know. Even YouTube doesn't have a preview of it. Is Karyu no Miya even real? |

The Speckies and the Finkies would never agree to that.
Like the elitist Oscars voters. |

I don't think YouTube does previews of books. |

It's real. Though the only mentions of it that I could find apart from that Amazon.jp link were related to it winning this award. And Amazon.jp has only 5 reviews for it. So I guess it's pretty obscure. Though that's bound to change considering that it's currently the best selling SF/horror/fantasy novel at Amazon.jp. |

But YouTube does have reviews and people talking about books. |

In the US, any un-translated book will be infinitely obscure compared to anime. There's no fan translators, no big hype about "what's coming out this season," and no massive internet community dedicated to reading them. Also, the search engine results for "Karyu no Miya" and "華竜の宮" will be extremely different. |

華竜の宮 That's what I searched with. Checked 4 pages in Google, and after the Amazon.jp there was nothing but this same news in Japanese. |
