I figured this movie wasn't gonna be any good; so instead of buying Appleseed, I got Team America: World Police. Airwolf: Season 1 and Def Leppard's new CD instead.

Not to stray too far off topic, but. . .

Airwolf? They've actually released that on DVD now?

Gods, I can remember watching that back in the 80s. . .

Not crazy about animation done in full CG, however I find that cell shading does give it a little appeal despite the fact that the animation is still done in CG underneath. If it had been left as a realistic looking CG flick, like ala'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' I would have not been able to stomach it. But CG works better dealing with mechanical stuff than with people. The characters were WAY too shiny! Laughing

I enjoyed this movie far more than the 'Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence' movie. I just gave up on that one about a quarter of the way toward the end. I just didn't care anymore. The only reason I sort of support this movie is not because of the hype, but because it's a 'Shirow' flick and it's the first 'Appleseed' movie to be done in what 16 years. Plus, me and 'Shirow' go way back to my HS days. So I pretty much support anything and everything he's done. Smile

I found the film entertaining for what it was. But I also felt the film had some problems as far as character developement and the plotting is concerned. Hitomi might have been dead on from what I remember despite the comedic aspects. Deunan was too subtle versus her manga counterpart. Not to mention a lot stuff was changed for this feature. That's what happens when a manga is adapted into a animated feature. Like Deunan and Briarieos' backgrounds which were completely changed. You really don't hear much about Deunan's mother in manga until much later. She wasn't a scientist. Most of the background info revolves around racial issues concerning the two. This is only mentioned in the manga and in various sourcebooks. I guess they wanted to come up with a new story that isn't like the manga page for page. To me this wasn't the 'Appleseed' I expected to see. The OVA that was done back in 88' is closer to Shirow's ideal than Shinji Aramaki's version. But I'm sure Shirow still approved it. And Aramaki will probably be directing the 2nd movie plus, the TV series. I don't even know now if I want to give the series a chance. But I pretty much give all anime a chance (see my public list of crap watched) . I would have rather seen a TV series adapted from the manga. But hey what can you do? Smile

This feature while visually entertaining was nothing more than a product of how far CG animation can go. And believe me they proved what they said. Wink

Now the question stands would I want to own it? Yes, like I said I found the action entertaining enough. Plus, It's 'Appleseed'. So to me it's worthy enough to grace my shelves.

Well, i would've invested my chump change on Appleseed before buying a Def Lepard CD. Razz Airwolf is cool just for that nostalgia feel (plus it was much better than Knightrider.)
and Team America is like Captain Scarlett on crack. which isn't really a bad thing. LOL

For the most part i ignore ANN reviews because what they may think is treasure, i would deem it as junk and vice versa.
Hence i didn't think Appleseed was bad or overrated as such.
For those Purists, the CGI-cel shaded animation can easily be dismissed as "crappy weird looking animation" however i thought it worked. my suggestion for the whinners, stick to the 90's OVA.
