hmmm... Kenshin's famous "oro", would that be considered a running gag?

Good one!
I'm not sure if this counts as a running gag - but I have seen animes where a character will make a joke about other super-popular anime, or were an episode will be made as a parody. (i.e. Tenchi Muyo!'s Pretty Sammy)

So far v1cious is the only one who gets it. The others are just generic gags.
Anyway, I was watching the FLCL director's commentary and they mentioned a few. Canti gluing its pieces back together, Naota wearing different hats, etc. to cover his growths, curry references, cats... that's all I can remember off the top of my head. Running gags aren't always obvious.

Well, its also a plot point as well as a running gag, but I really enjoyed all the references and reverence to "Gekiganger 3" in Nadesico.

Some examples of running gags in anime:
The "Sit" gag or whatever it is called in Japanese in Inuyasha.
Certain jokes about Lina Inverse in Slayers.
Team Rocket's speech in Pokémon

I know that this isn't really on topic, but it is somewhat related...
I noticed in several anime there'd be a character that appears with one arm up and one arm down at right angles to the body posed in what appears to be a running position, its mouth is open like it is screaming, and resembles the characater Cactar from the Final Fantasy games. I tried looking it up on Google, but I have no idea what to call it. The only thing that comes to mind is Haniwa, and I remember a web page a few years back that was collecting them. Anyone have any ideas?

Waterfall of tears. I thought that would been one of the first (I forgot about myself until I watch "Sen" cry today.)
