Look no further than "Grave of the Fireflies".

"Voice of a Distant Star", would fill the bill as well afterwards.

Yes, you cant go wrong with Grave of the Fireflies.
Also, I highly reccomend Saishuheki Kanojo (Ultimate Weapon Girlfriend/Saikano). I watched it only 2 times in my life because... well after both watchings I got REALLY depressed. This things digs into your brain and fires a nuke of sorrow. So yeah, Saikano is REALLY sad. And maaaaaaybe Koi Kaze.
Oh, I happen to think that the Rurouni Kenshin OAV are really down-bringing, but in poetic way.

The saddest anime series that I've seen is SaiKano. Even though it's made out to be a war story, the series focuses on the powerful and emotional relationship between Shuji and Chise, and all of the heartwrenching hardships they had to go through just to express their love for each other. The emotions of this series were so real that everytime I think about this series, I break into tears; it's that powerful. Crying or Very sad Very highly recommended! Razz

I've seen Saikano and Grave of the Fireflies, and neither are the saddest titles I have seen. Grave of the Fireflies is way up there, and Sakano is mainly just depressing, but really, both seemed to try too hard to be sad/depressing. They did nothing but have people die left and right, with little character depth/plot development. So if you're looking for nothing except something to make you cry, look no further, but if you want a kickass series that can make you sad as well as have a great plot/characters/etc, then here is what I recommend..

My favorite:
Now and Then, Here and There - its a drama/action series that won't leave you crying every episode, but when sad stuff does happen, you'll be emotionally affected.

Voices of a Distant Star - a very beautiful romance story, much better than Saikano's even though this one is only 20 minutes long Smile

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal - while it isn't the saddest anime around, it has some powerful drama with quite a bit of action. A masterpiece and one of the best anime I have ever seen.

Also, I haven't seen Full Moon wo Sagashite but I hear that is a superb drama series.

"Grave of The Fireflies" is based on a true story of the author's own experience. He made the ending the way he did to emphasise the fact that though he survived, many his age then did not.

Kenshin OVA
GUNNM OVA
Wings of Honneamise
Vampire Hunter D BloodLust
Hana Yori Dango
Video Girl AI
Maison Ikkoku
Berserk

Good luck and enjoy.!

EDIT: Lets not forget Grave of the Fireflies but watch at your own risk. You could be depressed for weeks after watching it.

I found the first season finale of Sailor Moon sadder than Grave of the Fireflies, which left me lukewarm.

Although X:The series was alot of action and psychodrama even, I thought the last 5 episodes or so to be extremely depressing. Also take a look at Love Hina! Very Happy

Anime that tries too hard to be sad or exists simply to see how much Prozac you can down in one sitting has always annoyed me. In short, I don't like SaiKano.

I think Gundam (certain parts of M.S. Gundam and 0080) had some pretty affecting moments, but it doesn't exist for the sole purpose of making you depressed, so it may not be what you're looking for.
