I got the Yogart joke (from Spaceballs). I didn't see it until now. Anyways, what is K-ON! doing that is any different than any movie, US or Japanese, wouldn't be doing also? A lot of money is made on the merchandising. Look at all the merchandising tie-ins for many movies. Many animes only wish they could be the "next big series". That doesn't happen that often. |

I got the joke and have the collector's edition 2-disc set in-hand too but I don't see how getting the joke requires me to reply to it. |

I don't think the person posting in a format like this is 4chan should be talking about class and taste.
Pretty much. The merchandise is one of the best things about anime. Image songs, OP/ED, figurines, statues, they're all awesome and one of the reasons I adore anime and find it as enjoyable as I do. Besides, who doesn't want to play a K-ON TCG? |

I enjoy Japanese Animation for the plot, serious characterization, and meaning. I have little to no interest in merchandise. Ghost in the Shell did introduce me to some Yoko Kanno, but I think it rises above mere commercialism.
I wish we could raise standards, instead of gleefully embracing the Lowest Common Denominator. |

One man's pandering is another man's striking while the iron's hot. So some names have similar notions about commercialism it doesn't make it less effective or stop them from merchandising their wares as they see fit.
No product that is purchasable rises about mere commercialism. |

There is nothing wrong with a bit of commercialism. I do agree with AS about what pandering is to one person is something different to another. I am not always huge on merchandise but there are some shows and other stuff that I want the merchandise for because I am a fan of it. K-On! is obviously quite popular. From the little I have seen of the show it is not that bad. If you do not like K-on! that is fine do not watch it. There are still quality shows being made each season so you can always watch them instead of what you call "commercialism shows" |

I have no problem taking that opinion. I have been amused at some of the short videos I have seen of K-On. But I don't want to argue that "everything is equally commercial". Yes, everything has a price. But not everything has the same quality either. And I believe we can make objective judgments about quality.

This also goes similar to what AS said. Quality is just as subjective as pandering from person to person. I have said all I want to for now so I am breaking off from this conversation. |

So you wouldn't like one of these? |

Honestly not, at least at this time. I would like to read the Ghost in the Shell manga someday. Of course, I don't have much room either. That is what happens when you are still living with your parents, and your mother is storing a lot of her belongings in your room. It is a small price to pay for college.

No "we" cannot. You can make what you claim is an objective judgment, but it is still just your opinion. You can complain about commercialism all that you want but without it there would be no anime industry. Every business has to make a profit in order to survive. I may be wrong about this because my memory is not very reliable, but some things that I have read make me think that merchandise sales really support the anime industry. Is there any truth to that? |

This article is a good example of why the anime industry is so anemic outside of Japan -- a large amount of their revenue from series in Japan comes from merchandise sales and secondary related things like drama CDs, etc. (Or if it's an adaptation, the show is used to drive sales of the original manga or light novels)

since the manga has split and now we have amanga about the main 4 girls in college, and one with azunyaa and yui's sister, I am sure sooner or later we will get a new anime, whether is is an anime of the spinoff first, then one with the whole group is still anyone's guess.
I say have a 12 episode season with azunyaa, then at the end she goes to the same college as the main cast, then it can kick into high gear in the next season. you know I wonder how good K-On is selling for bandia here in America, I know I own the blu-rays, and I pre-ordered the last volume, but if they dont license the second season, that would mean it didn't do good enough |
