Osamu KOBAYASHI

Two different directors sharing the same kanji. One was born in the 40s, the other in the 60s. There's also a seiyuu with a different kanji in there. It's been brought up before.

Here:

Basically, it's 3 different people having the same Kanji name.

Osamu Kobayashi (小林 治) the old director was born in 1945. Since his name is spelled exactly the same in Kanji as Osamu Kobayashi the young director (小林 治 b.1964), it's no wonder people put his name under a recent shows that he never worked on.

Kobayashi the voice actor
It just doesn't make any sense when an animation professional was doing voice acting when he should be busy directing, writing, or drawing.

And here.

I'll give a proper cleanup later, but I could use some help on the seiyuu entry if anybody is willing to help out. Aside from that I'm just posting this here to remind myself....

SPLIT/MERGE INFORMATION:

Looks like there's 5-6 people here.

---------

The credits:

Heat Guy J: Animation Director
Karas (OAV) : Animation Director
Midori Days (TV) : Animation Director (ep 3)

Should be moved to Satoru Kobayashi, see here and here.
--
The credit:

New Getter Robo: Promotion Support

Probably belongs to somebody else. This is the only such credit on here, so maybe it'd be best to just hide it? I don't think it belongs to either Kobayashi.

----
The credit:

R.O.D -The TV- : Key Animation (ep 8)

Should be moved to Shirabe Kobayashi, source.

The source for the Doraemon movie gives the seiyuu's name & role as 小林 修 (ヤーク) ("Yack"), and this guy (小林 修 = こばやし おさむ = KOBAYASHI Osamu, born 1934-11-22) has even an English Wikipedia page. The Japanese Wikipedia page has a myriad of role references, so this might in fact be one person active over 55 years.

Finally finished this up, I think. Upgrading from WIP to split request.

Looks like there are at least three:

小林修 (seiyu)
Recently deceased, veteran voice actor. All the voice roles listed are his.

Now where it gets confusing is these two, who both have worked as animation directors:
小林治 (アニメ演出家) (Osamu Kobayashi (animation director))

小林治 (イラストレーター) (Osamu Kobayashi (illustrator))

It would seem the older stopped working in the mid 1990s and had legal troubles, and the younger one didn't really do much until the 21st century, so mabe it wouldn't be that hard to separate.

I think I got the split down pat, but I welcome any corrections.

it's hard to tell up from down on this one

split: seiyuu / director; older / director; younger

This leaves the seiyuu with 8 staff credits that need to go somewhere else.

(2002) Heat Guy J (TV)
(2004) Midori Days (TV)
(2005) Karas (OAV)
(2003) R.O.D -The TV-
Belong to Satoru Kobayashi / Shirabe Kobayashi; need to be purged & re-added.

(2004) New Getter Robo (OAV)
(2011) .hack//Quantum (OAV)
Belong to some PR person also named 小林治 ?

(2001) Touch: Cross Road - Kaze no Yukue (special)
(2006) Hellsing Ultimate (OAV)
No idea.

In addition I'm having doubts about the older Kobayashi's 2005 Zettai Shonen credit.

I just found one more Osamu Kobayashi, also an animation director (what, is this a popular name in anime industry?). Good news: the kanji of his given name (理) is different. Bad news: that kanji name has already been submitted under Satoru Kobayashi (as braves mentioned), and Satoru is also a valid pronunciation of kanji 理. Some Japanese websites even have question marks beside the furigana.

Worse yet, there's a musician in entry #74932, and his kanji name is 小林哲! Fortunately there are plenty Japanese websites confirming his name so I can split him to #107538.

Now the problem is, we've already used up two "directors" with similar backgrounds: animator -> animation director -> director. What disambiguation suffix should we use for this one?

Should be moved to Satoru Kobayashi, see here and here.

A big problem is, there's no valid source to inform us whether 理 should be pronounced as Osamu or Satoshi (both valid). In fact I found more Japanese websites go for the former, but they are not sure either (furigana provided by allcinema.net can't be trusted 100%).

We could scrap the [older] [younger] thing altogether and go with [1] [2] [3] or [I] [II] [III] instead?

If only we could obtain their respective year of birth...... Animation staff, unless highly popular and famous, seldom disclose such personal info to the public.

Since there's an article referencing the seiyuu now, I was looking over the non-seiyuu credits for now, particularly 小林理, and I'm hesitant to purge it for "Satoru" given that I can find absolutely no sources that use that reading. Checking over various things I could find R1 credits, for instance:

Midori Days: Osamu
Gungrave: Satoshi
Heat Guy J: Osamu
Twelve Kingdoms: Osamu (28, 43), Satoshi (32, 38)

No Satoru's, only some Satoshi's... Actually, despite the currently listed kanji, Satoshi Kobayashi is mostly him. I've checked Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie. Haven't seen kanji credits for Phantom Quest Corps but being an inbetweener lines up with the 小林理 chronology. I think only Windaria is 小林智

Since the HeatGuy/MidoriDays/Karas anime credits have already been re-entered under Satoru Kobayashi, I've marked them as "misreading of Satoru Kobayashi (#74932)" for the seiyuu. But whether that's correct or not... they may belong to a animation director named 小林 理 (こばやし おさむ)

person#642 Osamu Kobayashi 小林 修 seiyuu
person#106092 Osamu Kobayashi 小林 治 director; older
person#106093 Osamu Kobayashi 小林 治 director; younger
Osamu Kobayashi 小林 理 animation director Heat Guy, Midori http://www.allcinema.net/prog/show_p.php?num_p=129170
person#74932 Satoru Kobayashi 小林 理 animator Karas, Midori, Heat Guy
person#33662 Satoshi Kobayashi 小林 智 (animator) Karas
person#48457 Shirabe Kobayashi 小林 調 (animator) ROD TV
person#107538 Satoru Kobayashi 小林 哲 musician
Did I miss anyone involved in this mess?

Um, maybe I'm missing something here, but how exactly do we know that there are two different 小林理? I mean, there are separate profiles in all cinema, but there's no actual credits on that site for this supposedly other person who shares the same name. 小林理 is also listed on the new Sengoku Basara movie as both an animation director and a key animator, so I'm assuming this person is both one and the same with the other animation credits associated with 小林理, and that there aren't two 小林理; one who's strictly an animation director and the other who's strictly a key animator.

Going by the current source (livedoor wiki), there is no 小林智 in Karas. It's 小林理.

Hmm... I have the UK DVDs for Karas, the French BD and the first Japanese DVD.

French disc has all six ending credits in Japanese, so score (Manga turned it into two movies by joining it into sets of three episodes with one English credit roll apiece):

Confirmed 小林理, Likewise eps 2 and 3.

I'll be back with the English credits later as I got distracted by the theme songs, gardening and now pancakes.

---

There's actually an English credit roll at the end of the French BD (they must have done a two part DVD release as well), but it only seems to cover the latter three episodes so I'll have to switch to the Manga DVDs.
Manga says Osamu Kobayashi (although they have only included his Animation Director credit, not the assistant ones):
