On the one hand, I like the fact that they're trying to tell a serious story about war...

On the other hand, I can't help wincing when almost all the characters look like j-rock bishonen or moe bishojo.

They're trying to portray the tragedy of war, but having such over-idealized character designs makes it difficult to take any of it seriously. There's something almost gross about combining merchandise-driven character designs with tragic, war-oriented storytelling.

If you can imagine replacing major characters in Grave of the Fireflies with the members of Johnnys and Morning Musume, that's the awkward feeling I got watching this trailer. Confused

Tactics was pretty damned serious, yet no one seemed to mind that all the characters looked like a bunch of noseless, heavily armored Precious Moments figurines...

Wow, that was remarkably bleak for a FF intro. I felt so bad for spoiler[the chocobo.] I've only played the console games, so I don't know about the story lines for the handheld releases.

Remarkably even in this god-forsaken universe at war we still have cute meganekko schoolgirls in plaid-skirted uniforms. That could be another FF wardrobe first, along with the necktie Hope sports in the sequel to FF XIII.

While all the FF casts skew young, this one appears even younger than usual. It didn't appear there was anyone like Auron, Balthier or Sazh in the parties shown in the preview. Maybe it has something to do with the PSP audience?

^ Nope. Not yet as far as I know of. But I expect it to happen sometime in the future since it was one of the three that were highly publicized in the past. (Although, that may also depend on Japanese sales...)

As for this war themed bloody OP..., it does seem a little odd to see the more realistic looking victim being in the same scene as a bishonen looking character. Yet, I don't mind at the same time.

spoiler[ I think I got that the Chocobo's name is "Chichuin", or something like that..? Almost thought the poor guy was calling for his father. Looking at the time that kept telling you how long it took for the guy to die, I'm a little surprised he held on that long. Even if he said he was scared... Although, it was pretty anti-climatic, to me, when his Chocobo gave its final cry at the end... R.I.P. you and your Chocobo. ]

They are lost without the key members of square. All they do now is apologize and make spin-offs of their once popular titles.
