I'm pretty sure this doesn't happen very often in anime, given how the Japanese are pretty lenient about censoring.
However, I have seen a couple of series that uses the form of censoring that is pixelization on various things, and the reasonings are either obvious, or non-understandable. An example of an obvious reason for censoring/pixelization would be in the last episode of FLCL, where Naota's Dad's private area is heavily pixelized in the "manga panel" scene. An example of a non-understandable reason for censoring/pixelization would be in episode three of the currently unliscenced Comic Party Revolution, where Kazuki, the main character, and his group were told to read a large stack of various baseball manga. The thing is, all the covers of the baseball manga were pixelized. Why? I suppose the answer is somehow affiliated with copyright protection, assuming that those are actual manga you can buy. In which case, what I don't understand is, why did they go to the trouble of implimenting the manga into the show, only to have it all be censored? What was the point? Or maybe this whole censoring/pixelization thing is just a gag, and I'm looking way too much into the issue. |

I think that the censoring issue is one where they have to censor one of two things A, Nudity for anime directed to younger audiences, and B, copyrighted material. ie a can of Pepsi. The think is anime is a drawing so they can make anything seem like its suppost to be something else, mabey in the case of the baseball think they made it seem sexually descriptive and where forced to censor it. Although I haven't seen it yet. There can be many different resions for this but thats why I think they did it.

The proper term for the "pixelization" is a mosaic.
I'd actually prefer seeing mosaics more often rather than some of the outright editing out that we see on TV. I really think Adult Swim should encourage their use in the anime they show. Emerje |

Actually, I think that in both of those cases, the works were censored in the Japanese versions for parody purposes. Basically, most anime and manga has some form of censorship over primary genatalia (not breasts though). When such nudity is shown, especially in a non-adult program (like FLCL) it would certainly be censored.
In those particular anime, the use of censoring would be no different than in a US show airing on network television, in whcih a character says the F word, knowing full well it'll be bleeped, or runs around naked, knowing full well that a black bar will be placed over his privates. The idea is to say "this is dirty", without actually BEING dirty. |

All porn/hentai and anime which display genital is censore in japan. If they're sold outside of japan than they don't have to be censore. Would you want to live in a country with censored porn? |

Actually, I like their use of shadows and cropping to obscure nudity, since it doesn't look as stupid. |

I also prefer obvious censoring over subtle censoring. It makes it perfectly clear that they messed with something, rather than trying to be so damned coy about it.

It seems slightly ironic that you pay for something thats censored and ideally it is something most people that buy it dont want censored
