Again, I can understand this format of manga and anime not appealing to a more Western audience who is more into manga and anime for the plot instead of the characters. (Plot instead of character love, narrative instead of database consumption)
I personally see these forms of manga and anime as a window to the lives of other characters. As long as one likes (loves) the characters, you'll want to see more of them, how their lives are going, what antics they are up to, etc... There's nothing more to it than it being a stress free and relaxing experience... and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Interestingly, I find it kind of funny that the common 'cons' of a slice-of-life manga is "lack of serious character development or a compelling plot", when technically, in real life, you never have any compelling plots or character developments.
While I understand that Slice of Life manga is not for everyone, I just wish that not everyone would write it (or the entire genera) off without taking a look at it for its 'lack of plot'.

I wonder why this person reviews manga that he's obviously biased against, like K-ON or Naruto.

It's his job, he's probably forced to review it.

I don't see in the review anything that points out he is biased against it. And even if there is, what's the problem? Most people reads these manga with another opinion on their mind (from the anime or from a friend), or they come to the site to read what others with more experience in the medium thought about it.
And there is just no way anyone who follows anime/manga as much as the people who work on the industry to actually read or watch something without any early impression.
I think the reason why you think Carlo is biased against it is because you are biased yourself.

I love a good slice of life series, but K-On was a bit too boring and a bit too wishfulfilment-of-happy-school-days-and-perfect-friendship like, and too shallow characters. But well, it's mostly a "feel-good-series" rather than slice-of-life. But I'm interesting in the university part of the story, since you rarely see that as a setting in animes or mangas.

I think real life writes the best (as in most complex, most interesting, most horrible, most amazing etc.) stories. And of course you have character development. Humans would be pretty sad beings otherwise oO

I envy your interesting life. Sadly, for me, no conspiracies have emerged, no aliens, espers, time travelers or sliders have appeared and there is no such thing as Santa Clause... It's just the mundane. Day in, day out. (^.^;)

When I watched K-On! I loved the 20% where stuff happened. Then there was the 80% where they just sat there eating cake and talking. "So... what are you up to?" "Eating cake." "Cool, me too."
I swear, if one anime desperately needed a dirty joke every now and then, it was K-On!. Mugi had that line about their teacher, but like nothing else. Seriously, who else thinks that some sort of underlying attraction between two characters would have really done something to break the monotony?
Yeah, my life is pretty boring. The best part is when I watch anime. What about a slice of life show where they just watch anime? Watch someone watch tv or sit at their computer.

Not sure that this is a bias. Carlo just denies genres' core rules that K-On or Naruto are based on (no, it is not my opinion, it is what he basically himself writes in these reviews explaining how bad the projects are). For this reason, he can not judge the quality of works in these genres, his marks have no meaning.
Its like making chess player review a soccer match or a footballer to review a chess party. Completely pointless. You can not judge soccer by chess rules or vise versa.

For someone who denies the genre's core rules of Naruto, Carlo sure loves Bleach.
Also, there are slice of life series that develope the characters and plot. I think the problem here lies with the format, not the genre; K-on is a 4-koma, meaning it's closer to a comic strip, like Garfiel or Peanuts, than usual manga, which makes a manga reviewer kinda lost. In this point, I agree with you, MaxSouth.

More proof that you can't trust ANN reviews. Not every manga/anime has to have superpowers and/or be a soup opera to be entertaining.

My favorite scene in this volume was Ritsu at the arcade failing at Drummania

I forgot that Carlo loves Bleach; now I remember that he does indeed. If so, then his approach is not consistent, which is not really good for a reviewer.
