So I see a popular title matching its own print copies day-and-date for release (Naruto), and another title actually beating the physical copies to market (Black Bird 10). And at basically a 50% discount in each case? That's an aggressive push, all right - not just into digital, but out of print entirely. This makes DC's digital transition look almost conservative.

I should think it would be a 50% discount to be honest. You get alot less for your money (lack of actual ownership and physical book) therefore you should pay a lot less.

I would pay 5 times the amount to get a physical copy. I really do hope that it doesn't push manga into a digital-only market.

I don't think that manga will go digital only, and looking back on it I don't think even Viz is looking at that. However, I do expect the bulk of their releases are looking at being released first in digital, and then physically only if they do very well (basically, well enough to justify the 3-in-1 omnibus format), because those are the titles that they see as having the potential to break out to a wider audience.

As for the smaller audience titles, digital-only lets Viz see 35-50% of the physical price without having to deal with printers, warehousing, distribution, collecting from retailers/distributors (and being exposed to risks like Borders going bust), and other complications that I'm sure I can't even imagine. That 35-50% is probably about what they see on each physical copy sold anyway, so it's all upside to them as long as they keep releasing enough breakout hits to keep the manga audience from declining over time like Marvel/DC audiences have.
