I'd like a list of licensed R1 anime that can be considered any one of these adjectives: artistically valid, cerebral, character study, "deep", intellectually stimulating, philosophical, profound, psychological mindf*ck, substance > style, thought-provoking.

I ask because this is the type of entertainment I love the most in general (including anime) and I enjoy devoting my brain to the stuff I watch. I actually had an idea that I would write analyses/theses on any cerebral flick I see.

Of course, the suggestions are subject for debate and I'm prepared for that.

well there is BoogiePop Phantom and Lain, lain I find more interesting since it appears to be an attempt to explain Kants theory of God, that would fall into these catagories...

Angel's Egg (not R1) and Cat Soup are mind warps as well as you just wonder what is really going on.

I checked your My Anime list and saw that you had seen some of GitS: SAC, but apparently not GitS or Innocence. Both movies are pretty philosophical and thought-provoking. Dealing with what happens when the line between what is human and what is not is blurred could be nothing less.

Princess Mononoke - One huge underlining philosophy (extremely miss inturpretated into another, just as sensable though.) Aswom Art Work.

Gundam Wing series/movie - Philosphy-war sucks. Good art work too.

Samurai x - philosophy #1 - its at the begining and stated by...master...Ryu....war sucks (could also be symbolized through out the OAV.) #2 DO NOT swing you're sword around with your eyes closed Rolling Eyes.

FLCL - Philosophy - go out, buy the anarchist cook book, turn your Bass guitar into a gun and go steel the "guitar guns" of an intergalatic pierate. It has good art work.

Kenshin Series - war sucks and a sword with a reverse blade cant kill.

that all i can think of off the top of my head.

Political/Philosophical:
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Deals with psychological issues brought by technology and people becomming digitized androids or cyborgs.

Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
Heavy on the politics and deals with the philosophy of a soldier and war in general.

Gundam SEED
Same as above but throws in the extra issues of morality and superiority in a struggle between Genetically enhanced Cordinators and naturals.
--------
Mindtrips:
Serial Experiments Lain
Perfect Blue
Psycho Diver (To a lesser extent than the other two)
These all do their darndest to confuse the heck out of you or take you on a nice psychological journey.
--------
Thought Provoking:
Neon Genesis Evangellion
Big O (Mostly Season II)
Mostly philosophical and psychological durring the later halves but worth checking out.

Cowboy Bebop is definently artistic, and the music is great. It also makes it into the character study, thought-provoking, style, intellectually stimulating, philosophical, and at times "deep" catagorys. It's a good one!

I would suggest Kino's Journey {Kino no Tabi}. Kino is a traveller who spends three days only in every country she visits. Each country has its own unique culture and traditions. The series is about why people live the way they do and what Kino gets from being a traveller. I've really enjoyed the philosophy that the series explores and I also really enjoy the beautiful artwork.

Hmmm, I don't know if this would qualify, but check out Metropolis. Deals with humans and robots living together. The humans begin to grow a hate for the robots because they are losing their jobs to them and creating more poor citizens.

Evangelion / The end of Evangelion would probably be at the top of the list for a good ol' psychological mind f*@#. Perfect Blue, is an other good one, very psychological. Also i highly recommend Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer it may seem cliché now a days but when it came out it was such a new and original work (not that I saw it when it came out). It drags you in and makes you feel as though you live there in that world, it's such a beautiful peice of art.
