Is anime just a phase, an uncertain period in your life? My cousin, who originally showed me anime, was obsessed, as I am now. He gradually stopped watching his DVD's, he stopped going to conventions with me and now he is in college. He sold most of his anime off and now likes cars, racing, and beer, the kind of stuff that an average 20 year old is supposed to like. I can’t even relate to him anymore. Is it that he grew out of anime, did he grow up? Will this happen to me, I can never for see it happening, but maybe a glimpse of my future lies in him. Has anything like this ever happened to any of you? Do you feel as though it’s just a phase?

anime is like any other hobby or pastime, some people grow out of it, some people don't. i know that i used to be heavily into transformers and legos as a kid, but i don't play with them now, for instance.

A phase? For me, no. It's been one of my interests for a long time.

I've been into anime since I was about 14 or so, and don't see that changing anytime soon. I know some people who are in their 40's and 50's that love anime still(professors at my college), and I know some people that were fans when I was in my teens and now they hate the stuff.
Some people will grow out of it, some will emerse themselves further, and some will stay the same as they are right now. You might grow out of it, but if you do you'll probably look back on it with fond memories. ~LoneWolf |

My dad said that about me... ten years ago, so I don't think I'll get of it for many years.

It is what you want it to be, like most things in life. If you want to obsess over it, you will. If you want to quit, you will. |

Sometimes I wonder if I am becoming jaded toward anime. It used to be that I consumed whatever anime came into my possesion without a second thought. Now that I've seen alot of shows I find myself being picky about what I like and what I don't like. Still, I am thrilled whenever I find a great new series. I also would say that anime is less important to me than it was a few years ago; during the time since then I have found so many other things to fill my life with besides anime. What I am saying, is yes you do grow up and as you do your perception of anime will change. That does not mean that you have to give it up or stop liking it. For me, my love for anime has cooled, but also deepened. It is not just some phase.

At some point, probably in the next 5 years the bubble will burst and fandom will probably stabilize at the point we're at now

For some people it's not and for some people it is. I personally know several people who used to be into it but don't care anymore. I doubt that's unique. They don't necessarily outgrow anime, though I think a lot of the Pokémon/DBZ/Yu-Gi-Oh kiddies will, but other interests or hobbies or forms of entertainment come along that they find more enticing, or they simply don't have the time for anime anymore due to work or marriage or whatnot.
Just like how my brother used to be a voracious reader of Marvel Comics a little over a decade ago but stopped caring completely when he got into Warhammer, though that's more a lateral move in terms of nerdiness than it was him growing up. |

well, as far as i know the things you do as a kid will stick with you until you die.
My dad, who doesnt seem to be moved about anime in either way, has sat down and watched samurai x and some of Princess Mononoke. But he still watches cartoons, such as, teen titans and....a long time ago (for some reason i remember this) Pirates of Dark Waters. My grandpa still watches tom an jerry So you most likley wont fall out of it. I for one......have noticed a differnece from when I felt that Warm fuzzy thing when i watch or bought anime to a feeling that its just a cartoon. But damn good cartoons. So i wont stop. |

I think anime holds something that makes it very attractive I mean why else are all of us out there watching it and being drawn in?
I think for each person it changes, I mean someone might not watch any anime for months because of school or work but that doesn't mean they're put off it because of that gap. In fact that gap makes me aniticipate watching it even more. Anime doesn't have to be a phase even if there's a long space inbetween. It's all about the individual. ![]() |

I've been watching animes for over 10 years and still love it. I find animes even more entertaining than movies, because anything is possible in anime. You've got to appreciate the imagination of the Japanese mind.
With computer animation now, even big time movies are turning into, may I say, anime? The Chronicle of Riddick? Almost more than half of that movie is computer animation, with actors thrown in. Matrix anyone? Keanu was probably performing in front of a blue screen the entire time and didn't know what was going on. I think the different is that most animes still has that cartoon feel to them, and a lot of people just turn away from that style. To me, there is no different between animes and movies. It's the story and character design that matters. _______________________ My Animes |

personly for me I dont think so. Sure I've gotten burnt out at times with certain shows or I go back and try to rewatch something I loved back in the day and go "dear god this is crap"

Um. No. No, he didn't. I'm in my 40s and I am thrilled to have just found anime and manga. It's always exciting to find something new to explore and get obsessive over. Even if the thrill fades over time. It's happened to me over and over with so many things. Sometimes it comes full circle. Two days ago I went to the attic and dug out my sake pitcher among all of the Japanese things I collected during the phase I went through in the 80s. There is nothing like warm sake in the winter. It's when you stop finding new things that excite you and different ideas that stimulate your mind that you need to start being worried. |
