This makes the difference between being an alcoholic slut and a sober virgin?

They might as well have cut all that for time. Is that the best Gainax can do to portray a character as being alcoholic and promiscuous - bombard us with pictures of beer containers and lingerie? I find that pathetic somehow.

With all due respect, of course... Kyle's reporting is kindly appreciated, even down the the minor details like swear words, regardless of whether or not someone said something about it at a convention. I appreciate knowing what the difference is between what I'm watching and what others have/are watching.

However, I think he's being just a bit unfair in his commentary. I think pretty much everyone here is aware that Nadesico and Evangelion are late-teen to young adult shows being broadcast in what is otherwise a generally most-ages-friendly afternoon cartoon block. I am not the least bit surprised that language and sexual innuendo and evidence of subtance use were edited. Nor am I offended by it.

I wish he would lighten up a bit. I think that he is making mountains out of molehills in his assessment of the edits and corresponding criticisms of the Cartoon Network. In particular, I thought Misato's personality came across just fine without having seen dozens of beer cans painted a particular color or gratuitous nudity. Except perhaps for the absense of Pen Pen (and how much did that cut really matter, considering that only two episodes are being aired?) the plot itself is intact and for what it's worth I was able to enjoy the episodes in spite of the fact that I don't even care for Evanglion much to begin with.

I just don't think the missing "Damn"s are just cause for badgering CN so much, especially when the unedited tapes and DVDs have been around for years.

Otherwise, good columns. I've missed seeing them. I look forward to seeing more of them in the future.
Very Happy

Oh yeah. One more thing.

Quote:
ADV, of all the titles in your catalogue you could have offered to Cartoon Network that would have fit in with the giant robot theme why did you have to send them Eva?

Well... duh. Laughing

Has seeing all of the different threads and discussions dedicated to the series over the past who-knows-how-many-years taught you nothing? This is what people want to see.

Yeah, I remember when Adult Swim got started and everyone (verious other boards) started to wonder if Evangelion will show up on there. Sorry kids, even Eva is too Adult to go for a swim givien Misato's morals, Shinji's past, and Rei's confused lifestyle. Atleast Asuka's air head can be used a flotation device.

I agree completely. I was slightly disappointed they cut out Pen-pen, but given they'll only show these two episodes, he's not that essential.
At the very least, the plot wasn't altered, and I'm pretty happy with that.
I was actually glad they cut out all the fan service shots of Misato.

They insinuated commercial free though. I watched the ads for Robot Week and they definitely made it sound like it would be commercial free.

I noticed that they were throwing around the idea of Gigantor being "the commercials"... It struck me as being badly worded, but it never gave me the impression that they would be no commercials.

Was there something else? I only saw commercials for the block once, so I could have missed something easily enough.

Found the promo:
from the site http://www.toonamiarsenal.com/download/other.php

specifically, the Gigantor promo: http://www.toonamiarsenal.com/php/tdadownload.php?fid=000729

towards the end of the spot, it specifically says INSTEAD of commercials.

You heard the same thing I did, then.

Thing is, I have no qualms with dismissing it as a mistake in wording or an error by the Gigantor production staff. If they had promised no commercials in a press release or mentioned it in other context in the commercials, it might have bothered me. But since it wasn't, I'm not bothered. It's non-pay cable TV. I expect to see commercials.

Except that other stations have done non-commercial presentations as well. I believe it was the premiere of 24 on Fox that had no commercials. (Or at least it was some part of 24...either the premiere or the ending, I forget.)

Various other stations have played movies with no commercials. I think it was TNT (who is owned by the same parent company as CN) that showed Shindler's List a few years ago with no commercials. It's nothing new. And for one hour, I doubt they'd lose that much money.

Regardless...

If I want to watch TV without commercials, I'll watch PBS.

If I want to watch anime, I'll put up with commercials. I've been doing it for most of my life; no reason to be bothered by it now.

If I want both, I'll buy the DVDs.

Anime is a priveledge, not a right. Sometimes you have to take what you can get. C'est la vie. Insert other random cliches from the bootleg discussion threads here.

I'm not saying I mind the commercials. I'm saying they implied that there would be none, then put them in. It's not good to lie to your consumers.

there are so many cuts in eva. why did ADV even show it anyway??? i think the cut eps gave eva a bad name to people, and disappointed a lot of fans.

You think so, huh? Based on what evidence?

Outside of hardcore Eva fans and web communities like this one, I'd bet most people don't even realize that it's edited.

As for why they aired it... see my second post at the top of this thread. Editing or not, that should be a no-brainer.

I'm still not convinced that they were lying, per se. The wording of the ad is really tricky, but it's pretty clear that they were trying to say something about the scheduling of the Gigantor clips; not necessarily anything about commercials between shows. That being all there is, I think we should all be able to accept that it was a blooper. Bad method of explanation, bad wording, change of plans.... whatever.

It's not like they've been bombarding us with ads that proudly advertise COMMERCIAL FREE GIANT ROBOT WEEK, ALL THIS WEEK 4-5 PM! If they had, I would whole heartedly agree with you. But all we seem to have here is one off-handed reference, and I just don't see any reason to get excited about that.

...Especially when commercials is how cable networks operate. I mean, would you rather pay for the Cartoon Network? We already knew thay had them - we've been bombarded with them every fifteen minutes for years now. Even if they did outright lie about the use of commercials (although that makes no sense as such; what is to be gained from reporting incorrect scheduling information?) it really doesn't bother me because that's how they operate as a business.

We don't expect the video store to do free merchandise days, do we? And if there was a misleading statement in one of their ads that made people think so, and they didn't actually do it, would we have a right to be angry? Would it be fair of us to ask them to give away their merchandise for free because we heard them say they would?

Same applies to Cartoon Network in this case. Calling them liars and pointing fingers over this is pretty self-centered, not to mention illogical and useless.

so if I said I would give you a Porche instead of a Pinto, then I gave you a Pinto, you wouldn't be mad?

Actually, Yes. People sue over this kinda stuff and WIN. It's called False Advertising.
