I've seen the 1st and 3rd Patlabor movies, both of which I thought were good. So I'm just curious as to how similar are they to the series, because I have some interest in watching the series.

The movies are a lot more moody than the TV series. While the TV series deals with mundane things (it's not really a mech series), the movies are darker and more political in tone (especially the 2nd, which you did not see). The 3rd had nothing political in it but still, it was very moody. YOu will have noticed how little action it really had.

The TV and OAV series are more comical and more light hearted than the Movies.
The 1st Movie dealt with Eichi Hoba, whom had a semi-unabomber complex. He hated techonological advancement, and he felt that the Babylon Project was the anti-thesis of his viewpoints. So, he created a flaw in the Labor's OS where the Babylon "Ark" would act as a catalysit to cause the labors to go amok and cause (worldwide mayhem?). However, Goto and his rag-tag group of Labor operators figures it out, and how they solve it is not your typical "Hero saves the day."
The Second movie is more political than philosophical. Nagumo's former lover creates havoc where he pits the Metropolitan Police Department with the Jeitai (aka JSDF, Self-Defense Forces). This results from an ambush in Southeast Asia with United Nations Labors (where Nagumo's lover is the commander/unfortunate survivor of) against Enemy Forces. A communications breakdown in that incident somehow causes the turmoil with the conflict between the Jeitai and the Metropolitain Police. Nagumo's lover obviously lashes out against the Japanese goverment by causing a massive communications blackout and breakdown.
The third goes away from the core Patlabor Team and focuses on two detectives whom tries to solve mysterious Labor attacks that stems from a scientists sorrow of her lost daughter and her use of some mysterious cells.

Go watch Patlabor 2-The Movie now bro. It's the best of all three movies and I personally see it as anime masterpiece.

Of the movies, the first movie is the most like the TV series. The third movie is actually a story from the Patlabor manga (and maybe the animation. I haven't seen that far ahead), but told from a different viewpoint.
The TV & OAV series are excellent, with the focus on the goofballs in Section 2 and the dirty work they are given both in and out of the labors. Several OAV episodes are parodies of popular culture (especially the sea monster episode, watch for the Oxygen Destroyer), and the TV series varies between silly & serious, with the sharpest wit for the government and bureacracies and sometimes popular culture.
To me, it's one of the best anime series out there for characterization. And watching the series makes the movies that much better.

What's funnier is that it was just a counterfeit made by an otaku mechanic.
Also, is it just me, or did the monster in that episode look a bit like the Green Gargantua, Gaira?

I second that . The TV & OVA episodes are mostly very funny and lively experience to watch but can't really compete with the movies. Patlabor 2 is one of the best anime film ever made. In general if you liked the movies, you'll like the TV-show and the OVAs.

Patlabor is probably one of the best and most logical mecha series ever created.

Patlabor WXIII is much like episode 3 of the original Patlabor OAV series in which they deal with an underwater sea monster. The only difference is that this beast doesn't kill as much and the military doesn't play a huge part in the mission. Detective Kasumi does show up in that TV episode as well, which is why it is the most like the third movie. It's so sad that he makes very few appearences in the TV series and he's so much fun in the second and third films.

I personally loved the first movie more for it retained more of the feel of the TV series and the 2 OVAs.

I've been lucky enough to catch Patlabor TV on Anime Selects. It's an on demand channel on Comcast. If it's available in your area, I'd check it out.
I've only seen the first four eps, but they were all entertaining. It makes me think of Police Academy if it were a mecha anime.

Gonna have to agree with ow good the first 2 movies are for this, especially 2. Possibly the best movie that Momoru Oshii has ever been involved in. Pity that the series & OAV's are so far unavailable in R2 europe.
