Tonight is a new episode of Megas XLR, the pirate captain has a character design reminiscent of a Leiji Matsumoto anime. Anyone know what that anime is?

Wait are you trying to quiz us, or do you really don't know? Its of course Captain Harlock. It think he's Leiji's most famous creation. I only caught the tail end of the episode though. Don't mean to sound like the whiney fanboy, but comeon, Harlock obsessed with a girl? That is so not Harlockesque.

I was asking because I don't know. I only asked because I've seen Galaxy Express 999 and Railways, and the character design looked familiar.

Megas often does parodies of other cartoon/anime series. This is just another example. It was pretty hysterical.
(Previously they did a Battle of the Planets/Voltron parody too....the team came back in a recent episode. Again, hysterical.)

Ok, I admit I didn't see most of it, but if he doesn't act like Harlock at all I don't see what the point of the parody is. The Battle of the Planets pardoy was mostly funny to me because of the Casey Kasem impression.

Yeah, in the case of the morning episode, I knew what they were parodying because when I was a little kid I watched voltron. The main character of the group sounded like Casey Kasem as well.

o.O That *is* the point of a parody. To make fun of a known character/show/whatever. Just like the Voltron/BotP one was nothing like the actual team on either series....the characters were similiar....that is what makes it funny.

I don't think thats the point of a parody. The point of a parody is to make fun of the certain charcteristics of something, posibly through exaggeration. Its not to give them new characteristics and make fun of those.

A good parody matches the show being parodied more-like Excel Saga's version using Puchuus.
I knew where they were going when they mentioned the pirate ship, but the Harlock character was annoyingly un-Harlock-like

Didn't they also do a parody of Sailor Moon as well?

Yeah, it was more of the entire magical girl genre than just Sailor Moon. (Though the 'lead' girl of the team had the pigtails that Sailor Moon has......but those show up in other shows too.)

My favorite parody on that show will always be the parody of Battle of the Planets (AKA Gatchaman, AKA G-Force) in the form of S-Force. Not only did they do a great job of designing their arch enemy, Zoltar, but they mimiced all the original voices PERFECTLY. Even the Casey Casim impersonation is dead-on accurate.
Megas XLR is definetely Cartoon Network's best show because there is at least one cartoon or video game parody that anyone can spot in the show. Not to mention special guests voices like Bruce Cambell

Only because its age rating allows it to be. You're certainly not going to see the same level of toilet humor on Megas as you do on VB.
About this episode, they did exaggerate Harlock. The point here was to make Warlock less "Harlockesque" and more Pirate like. Rather than a noble fighter they made him into a lying, woman crazy, theif and killer; all pirate characteristics. They exaggerated Harlock's pirate characteristics.
