Well, it is obvious that The Incredibles and Shrek 2 will be the first two to be nominated, but it seems the that the third and final slot for nomination for Best Animated Feature will be between Ghost in the Shell 2 and Polar Express.
So, which do you think deserves that slot more? The Polar Express or GITS2? In terms of animation and story, I would go with GITS2. Polar Express is nice to look at, but when compared to Dreamworks and Pixar, it's behind it's time. Also, it is a Christmas themed story and Christmas stories usually don't make good nominations for an Oscar. GITS2 has some extremely detailed CG that Production I.G. took their time in rendering. I read one of the production journals of the animator who animated the Togusa doll and the blue sphere the dog was pushing around. Both were done in Maya 3D. It is amazing that I.G. was able to create such lavish backgrounds and objects from such a simple 3-D program. Story wise, it will definetely confuse people, even those who have studied everything Ghost in the Shell. Mostly because of the excessive quoting. All in all, from an animation student's perspective, I would like to see GITS2 take the third nomination slot. |

Innocence, while visually impressive, was somewhat muddled in its storytelling and rather bland in its character development. It isn't a shining example of anime like Spirited Away or some of the movies that got bypassed last year (especially Millenium Actress) were. Besides, Polar Express has gotten pretty strong reviews.
And don't forget the chance for a dark horse pick, like the French film last year. |

Polar express is a more revolutionary film in terms of animation. It's just really bizarre. GITS 2 didn't really do anything differetn than the first one did.

I don't think it's as obvious as it looks, since Nemo already won an award for Pixar, and Shrek already won an award for Dreamworks. Anyway, an FYC ad for Innocence is up at http://www.oscarwatch.com/FYC/Dreamworks/ghostintheshell1.html.

Maya simple program? dude, thats the stuff all the pro's use for all the uber effects. the 2 guys that wrote that program got an Academy Award for Technological Advancement or something like that. it cost $5000($3000 for the for the upgrade to the latest version if you already got a copy)

I wouldn't say that they're that strong. |

I think GITS2 has a very slim chance in winning the slot over Polar Express. It so far seems to be a family favourite, and as unfair as it seems, the animation category of the Oscars seems to pick family friendlies over mature.
Also saying GITS2 did as much as the first one in revolutionary terms is kinda... incorrect. I'm not sure of the animation techniques used in GITS2, but the original movies was ground breaking for 2D animation. Knowing Production IG, they probably are still pushing the boarders for their productions. |

Well, I think what seperates GITS2 from a lot of other animated films that use CG, is that despite how overboard they went with 3-D backgrounds, they are actually perfectly in sync with the 2-D objects and at a very high framerate.
The reason I'd like to see GITS2 on the nomination is that it is the only animated film that still uses 2-D animation with 3-D elements that has a chance for nomination. I think the Oscars should have a farewell tribute to Disney for scrapping it's 2-D department. There is just too many CG movies. At least with previous Oscars we've had 2-D animation on the ballot with CG films like Triplets of Belleville. |

Um, you can always download the trial version. I just find it a bit easier to use than 3Ds. |

No Ebert quote in the FYC ad = no real chance at getting nominated.

i agree, good old 2D definitly deserves to still be recognized even with all the advancements in technology |

Of course, the stumbling block with anything that has to be nominated is the fact that someone has to approve of it.
I keep thinking that the Best Animated Feature award was implemented not for serious animation to get a nod, but for family animation to get recognition -- and more people watching it. Think of the movies that have already won: Shrek and Spirited Away are both films that families can watch and enjoy. More serious, less family-oriented anime like Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and even GITS 2 stand little chance of being included in that category, much less winning it. Unless, of course, the Academy is full of members who want to give time to view Japanese anime. (Read: most likely not at this point in time) That's just the unfortunate reality of it. |

Mutant Aliens, Waking Life, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers were not nominated for best animated feature in the past. Brother Bear, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron, and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius were. Enough said.

I know this will not make sense since its old but if they would let "Grave of the Fireflies" run for Oscar, I'm sure it would grab more attention then GITS2.

As much as I hope GITS2 will be up for a shot, really, I don't see much chance of it being even nominated. The Oscars are just not friendly to this genre of animation.
