I'm very interested in watching an anime series/movie from the 1980's. Anyone has suggestions and opinions on which titles to watch?

Akira, 1988 i think it was released.
It's still better than many of the newest anime films today. |

For most anime fans, the '80s is where it's at.

The 80's is the Golden Age of animation, before most anime was "Image driven," "Moe driven," or whatever else you want to call that. So in many of the really famous 80's titles you get great animation made even better by the fact that you KNOW that it's handmade, not computer made, and no end of characters with actual depth to them.
That said, I was going to recommend Aura Battler Dunbine and Zeta Gundam, but they were both already stated. EDIT: Those taken, how about Armored Trooper Votoms? |

Story-wise, it's very good. The animation is sloppy, though. |

I wouldn't recommend the 1988 OAV, as it was a rather poorly-executed adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga. |

I liked Genma Wars, but the complaints about the plot's contortion are probably justified.

Armored Trooper VOTOMS is probably one of the best mecha series of the 1980's next to Patlabor. The story has balance of focusing on character development and the art of war. The first TV series that spans four seasons is out in America, but VOTOMS has gone on to many OAVs. |

I'm sorry did I say Genma Wars, well the English title for the movie I'm refering to is Harmageddon.

Megazone Part I and II are interesting anime to watch if you want a 80's feel.

I also love anime from the 80's as do I like anime from the present time. One anime that comes to mind is Megazone 23 as others have already suggested. The animation is just so "eye catching" to me for some reason and I love the background music. The story is unique and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I suggest checking it out.

Wings Of Honneamise, Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, Nausicaa, Grave Of Fireflies, Fist Of The North Star (a bit violent some might say) and Bubblegum Crisis (for cyberpunk fans).
