I am pretty sure that The Animatrix wasn't made in Japan but that doesn't matter. What I find strange is the setup and strcutre of it. The scenes are really really amazing each one getting better and better, but is the viewer supposed to be lost or did I just miss some keywords at the beginning or something?

The structure is 8 mini-stories done by 8 different animation teams and 7 directors (since Sinchiro "Cowboy Bebop" Watanabe did two of the 8).
It's merely the animation industry's take on The Matrix.
Think of it as akin to a Science Fiction omnibus -- same world but many authors with completely different situations and ideas.

I like the concept behind the Animatrix - bringing togeter the top directors of the anime industry and allowing them to do whatever they see fit. I enjoyed every single scene.
And though it wasn't made in Japan, it was made mostly by Japanese anime directors, so it's anime.

Well I think each animation was made in Japan at each individual studio, then sent to LA for editing, voicing, and compilation for distribution.

Yeah. Some of the shorts (the good ones) were made by Studio 4°C, and then a couple by Madhouse, and I don't know who did the rest.
Speaking of Matrix spinoffs, why are the Matrix Comics in the Encyclopedia? I feel sorry for the people who think 'American manga' when they hear the names Neil Gaiman and Tim Sale.

actually, time wise it takes place between the Matrix, and the Matrix reloaded, with the first 3 shorts being written by the guys who worte the matrix to explain what had happened as well as background info, the rest of the short were particular directors taking the Matrix concept and creating their own stories to go with it, if you every get a chance to watch the commentary I suggest you do since it gives you all the info as to what each director was doing.

That's because it's a collection of supplemental materials designed to flesh out the Matrix universe. Its plot is that of The Matrix, and its storyline is that of The Matrix.

No relevance at all except for explaining its origins (Second Renaissance I & II), bridging the gaps between the first & second films (Final Flight of the Osiris, A Kid's Story), etc., etc., etc., you mean?

Some of it had a minor role in movie & character development.
Trinity probably learned something or changed after her encounter with Detective Ash. *that was my favorite of the 9 shorts btw*
You saw how they gained that kid seen in Matrix Reloaded bugging Neo for his luggage.
The Second Renaissance I and II gives a historical background.
All did something to one of those effect's excluding Program, World Record, & Beyond. Those 3 were not great shorts anyway so ... *shrugs*

As said above, the Animatrix srved as a way to flesh out some history, plot lines, and to have everyone have their own take on what happens.
Besides the ones mentioned above:
Final Flight of the Osiris was a tie in to the Matrix game, which in turn showed another side of what was happening during Matrix Reloaded.
Program was just a seperate story meant to please ninja and action fans alike with a battle simulation set in Emperial Japan.
Beyond introduced the idea that, being a large computer, the Matrix can occasionally have glitches and errors within it's own world. This in turn leads to warped physics within the world.
Matriculated introduced the idea that the machines can, if they choose, work alongside humans. It also showed that they might have some sentiant(sp?) qualities.
World Record like Kid's Story, this was meant to show that besides the pill, there are other ways one could escape the Matrix. With Kid, he was able to just think about getting out of the Matrix. With the jogger, it was on accident by pushing his body to such a limit the barrier between reality and the Matrix blurred and, eventually, broke completely.

Final Flight of the Osiris was animated at Squaresoft's Hawaii studio when they were animating Final Fantasy Spirits Within. All the other pieces were animated at Studio 4 Degrees in Japan.

No, it's a "pre-credits" to Reloaded, like on TV before the credits. All the elements of Osiris are mentioned inthe movie

Personally I really liked Animatrix, because it gave more depth to the Matrix universe. I agree that most of the stories don't make that much sense if you haven't seen the first Matrix movie. As I understand it all animation was done in Japan, apart from Matriculated and Final Flight of the Osiris. Post production was done in the US.
