Hey guys, during my everlasting search for anime worth watching I've recently come across the Kara no Kyōkai - the Garden of sinners (movie series). Any way after reading some stuff about it I've become very interested in trying to pick up a copy of it to watch. However for the life of me I can't find a legitimate copy to get my hands on. Using Amazon I found a listing of the blue-ray set... that costs $800 so that isn't really an option. On eBay I also found a copy of the movie's listed... however they're located in Malaysia and I have suspicion that they are bootlegs. I'm not entirely so maybe someone who has more experience with identifying bootlegs can give me a hand with this. The sellers seem to be pretty reputable with strong feedback scores, and I'm relatively certain eBay doesn't allow bootlegs but I'm still not entirely sure.

Anyway I'm no stranger to streaming, and I also know that this is a text book case of why people argue for fan-subs. But that being said this series looks really special and I would much prefer to enjoy it legitimately. So I was hoping that maybe someone here might be able to give me some advice or point out some kind of legitimate release I could import. I really want to watch this series legitimately, but it this point it seems like that really is an option.

This was an unusual release stateside... basically, that $800 blu-ray you found? That's it. Aniplex released a limited number of the Japanese blu-rays stateside via amazon and TRSI, at the original price point. No other release has yet been announced, to my knowledge. We had a big ol' to-do about it when it released around here, with several folks not too happy about the high cost.

It could be worse, though... you could be looking for Cat's Eye. Laughing

You could go for the individual releases of the films on the region 2 Japanese dvds (no subtitles I imagine). If it comes from Malaysia and it's on dvd it certainly is a bootleg (bootleg sellers still have high feedback scores, and ebay is rife with them).

Or you could just rent them on the PSN for 2.99 a movie.

There are several affordable releases outside of the Japanese one, but unless you know French, German, or Chinese, you're out of luck. They're also only DVDs, so that's another potential blow.

You're best option is to buy a release and then download fansubs and watch those; that way you have the satisfaction of owning it and the ability to watch it. Or you can hope a US releases comes along, but that's a playing a guessing game.

The Renting idea is also a really good one unless you're really hung up on owning it.

Holy crap! Why didn't you tell me about this before?

Oh, and TC - you might as well give up owning this series legit. Aniplex USA has a lead pipe the size of Canada firmly stuffed up their collective asscracks. On top of some serious mental retardation to boot. They don't plan to make a release for normal people.

I don't know where you could purchase them at an affordable price, but you can rent them on the playstation network.

Here is the link to that news:

We don't know that for sure. I have a hard time believing they plan to leave money on the table since they must know there would definitely be a market for a reasonably priced version. My own supposition is that they plan to allow "x" amount of time to go by, then will come out with a regular release. The fact they have made the title available for rental through PlayStation would seem to lend credence to this assumption.

Except that they specifically stated in an interview that they have no plans whatsoever to make a normal release. Because they want us dumbfuck Americans to have a "happy feeling" when we piss away $400 on a set of 8 discs.

Things change all the time, that's true. But given their quote, a regular release is about as likely as Tales of Vesperia PS3 coming stateside.

I wasn't aware of that interview. I did a quick Google search to see if I could come across some reference to that, but came up dry. You wouldn't happen to have a link to it or could point me in a direction that I'd be able to follow to find it, do you?

Thanks for that link. I actually did read the interview when it first came out and must have promptly forgot about it. Anyway, here is the relevant section:

Quote:
ANN: Could there be a cheaper release later, to reach people who are interested but aren't ready to spend that much money?

AI: Right now, we're not in any talks for it.
As I said, currently US anime DVDs cost around the same price as Hollywood movie DVDs, right? Revenues cannot catch up with the popularity of Japanese anime in North America. We have built a relationship with Japanese fans and would like to [build the same relationship] with U.S. fans.

But we know that the anime programs that we produce aren't blockbuster hits like Hollywood movies and Pokémon. So we can make something interesting, but we can't price it like a popular Hollywood movie. At the same time, we understand that U.S. fans want a cheaper price. The situation is complicated.

HK: We want fans in the U.S. to enjoy the feeling they get when they receive the physical package. There should be a happy feeling that the package arrived at home.

To me, the Aniplex position is ambiguous. Saying that you are not involved in talks for a cheaper release isn't the same as saying outright, "we are never going to do one." Also, remember that this interview came out as the expensive version was about to come out. It wouldn't have made sense to undercut sales for it by saying, "oh sure, just wait a year and there will be a cheaper release, folks."

Bottom line, I think it would be as wrong to say there absolutely will be a cheaper release as it would be to say there absolutely won't be one. Personally, I choose to be optimistic because I am betting Aniplex will not turn down the chance to make more money now that the original expensive set is sold out.

Honestly? I don't want to sound like I'm riding your tail like PJ and Blood do, but it seems like everything is too expensive for you. I mean, you scoffed when I showed you the Le Chevalier D'eon French set for $80, and it's like you forgot the Euro is currently stronger than the dollar, so it's odd you were surprised it was that much. So, I went by that previous example (along with others like how you complain about S23 and Funimation prices) and just assumed you'd be unwilling to pay upwards of $250 excluding shipping for an item that's related show you're currently obsessed with.

BTW, that LCD French set is only about $68 now if you're still interested and willing.

I suck at French, so paying $80 for that set was too much for me. Smile Besides, my reasons for D'Eon were weird as hell. I wanted to splice in French audio to English subtitles. Cause it's more authentic! But, that reason alone doesn't warrant an $80 purchase.

That said, I can read German just fine, so this is definitely something I can consider. Even though I've never watched an anime in German subtitles....so it's gonna be awkward as all hell. If Aniplex doesn't announce anything by the end of the year, I just might scoop those up.

Oh sorry I forgot to mention I'm Australian. There isn't anywhere near the amount of anime in the US PSN store in the Australia store. I really love madman as a company but they are really far behind on the electronic distribution front.

I'll holler at y'all if I put my KnK set on eBay. It won't be priced anywhere near $800 (lol) $400 buy it now auction with unopened replacements for both defective boxes. I do indeed have a feeling Aniplex will be giving us an official North American version very very soon... I think those PSN rentals are a step towards something bigger.

Oh yeah, and don't buy those bootlegs. Download it if you want, but never never nevernevernever buy a bootleg. Phuck, I'd rather rip you my Blu-rays then see you spend $30 on that garbage. The money made from those goes to deviant shit like drugs and molestation.
