I have always pondered this ques myself, if not just a guide for me to follow and chart for myself. I have read what other posters have stated and yes, makes sense that within those thinly bound *classifications* or *labels* there could be levels of intensity or passion for anime.
I enjoy watching/collecting anime so I consider myself a fan I just might not carry the working knowledge or wisdom on certain subject matters because of my lack of experiencing these things. Such as attending Cons or knowing alot about J-pop culture. I think for myself just because I have been a long time anime fan since the '80's doesn't mean I can't learn something from someone who per se just recently became a fan a few years ago and knows more than I, I would hope they would be willing to share what they know/experienced, it could be fun.
I think sites such as ANN gives members & guests the ability to gather, research info and chat with others who may want to share what they know rather than withholding such info as long as it's what is stated is to be true and there is facts/figures to back it up. The encyclopedia is a wonderful idea to gather info in one place rather than have threads in all of the other forum catagories located in one spot. Brillance in the making Kudos for that! (wish there was a way to say thanks to you)

Yeah, I'd have to agree too, but his definition opens up that whole "who are you to diss my taste in shows!? Shoo you arrogant elitest!!" can of worms. It's hard to put a solid definition on fan without offending someone. But yeah, I agree.

Seconded. I may also add the statement "Do you purchase and/or stream most of the anime you watch legally?" "Yes" I do not consider leeches to be fans.

If you're reading or posting on this forum, it's safe to say you're an anime fan.
EDIT: In regards to the people bashing those who download anime, I buy a lot of anime on DVD, but there are plenty of anime which hasn't made it's way overseas from Japan for various reasons, like, say, "Legend of Galactic Heroes" or "Dennou Coil". I think I can consider myself an anime fan and still enjoy downloaded anime too.

That's why I said most, not all. I adore Nodame Cantabile, and would love for it to be released outside Japan, but I don't hold out much hope of that happening. So, downloads it must be...

I think for me also just keeping update on what is available to watch and collect makes me a big fan of anime. Seeing what is hot and what is not.
I think also makes me get interested more in J-pop culture and broadens curiosity in Music and Mangas.

See that last part is a secondary issue. That goes into the quality of a fan you are. Are you a fan who gives back to the product you enjoy or not? People's tastes also do not change them from being a fan or not to me. I mean there's anime for just about every possible taste out there. Anyone can be a fan simply by enjoying the product. In this case anime. That's the easy discussion. Then you get to the real meat of the issue which is the TYPE of fan you are and the QUALITY of a fan you are. That's the can of worms there. You can be a fan and still hurt the product you like. Happens every day. Doesn't mean you're not a fan. Just means you're a jackwagon and should have your scrotum pulled over your head. You're still a fan though.

I was going to bring up the bit about the fact that I wouldn't doubt that every user of this forum is unquestionably a fan. I doubt a non-fan would sign up for something called 'Anime' News Network, let alone become a subscriber.

Well there are all those spambot posters that crop up every once in a while to hock s*** like jewelry and cell phones but whether they qualify as people is the real question.

I hate anime. I'm only here for the open bar.
