This looks like it would be worth watching... unlike the anime.

LOL, I hate how people dismiss initial D for silly reason.
Best racing anime ever.

Damn, Edison chan is in the movie, he's going to gay up the move....he get a lot of lame role lately, hopefully this will gain him some respect. I'm just gonna rent it to see how it is.

I didn't like the anime because the CG wasn't all that great. Tokyopop did it even worse by totally Americanizing the dub by editing the video and changing the songs.

Watch the original classic version then. You're getting two different version on 1 dvd. The CG wasn't that good because the anime is old.

As a matter of fact, a lot of asian live movie prior to 1998 had bad cg effect too.... Storm Rider and Sixty Billion dollar man comes to mind.

I know that Tokyopop includes the original Japanese dub, music and subtitles, but that doesn't mean I'll still watch it.

LOL are you serious? If you don't like street racing,... most street racing fan like the anime just fine.

But when you say the anime suck because it had bad "old" CG, you're just being a close mind person.

Don't fool yourself thinking that because Tokyopop "americanized" Initial D automatically makes it crappy because you have two version. That condescending way of thinking is not good, especially for someone who probably only watch fansub.

Well, I watched two episodes of the fansub, and thats why I don't like it. I do like racing however.

Maybe I'll borrow Initial D from someone and watch the Japanese w/english subs.

What you neglect to realize, is that Kusanagi-sama my not like watching subtitled anime. If such is his choice, and he feels (as many do) that Tokyopop wrecked the dub, then it would be rather stupid of him to buy the DVD, wouldn't it?

Personally, I'm a huge motorsport fan. Including "street racing." I've read Initial D, and I've watched the first season. I didn't like the anime for esthetic reasons. The crappy CG really detracts from the visual quality of the show. Better CG was available at the time, the producers just didn't invest in it. What's more, even if better CG wasn't available, the inability to do something right does not excuse one from doing it wrong. My other gripe with Initial D, with the manga and the anime, is that it portrays drifting very unrealisticly. Drifting isn't about racing, it's about style. Watch a real drifting competition (ie: D1) and you'll see that they're judged on style. When it comes to racing the fastest way through any but the smallest radius corners is not to drift(sometimes exception: powerslides).

Still, I enjoy the manga a lot, just not for it's technical correctness.

Please, please let this come to the USA......

And please let someone other than Tokyopop grab this. ADV Films, ya listening?

------------

Also, Keiichi Tsuchiya (aka The Drift King) actually taught Jay Chou how to drift and did most of the Drifting with the Trueno (ref. his Drift Bible, where he mentions this). Just an interesting tidbit.

--------

And i'll add a few images as well.

Here is the cast list breakdown:

And here is the photo opt:

The Tofu Shop:

The Gas Station:

(Apparently, the Gas Station aquired a Female Worker. You can see her in the clip.)

Pics of the Trueno:

And "Papa's" Benz.

I do like fansubs. If you were to take a look at my anime list, you would see just how many anime I've seen. It was just that the fansub, which was more of a DVD Rip, was done by a group with the number 2000, and a couple of A's in it.

I have read the manga that has been released by Tokyopop and wow they are really going to make a live action of this? I really don't think you can recreate Takumi's drifting/racing skills that is needed to win the battles.

If this is a big budget film, they can pull it off. They could get the skilled stunt men drivers to do the crazy and impossible drift. Or the last recourse is CG. But if their CG department sucks, its the movie's downfall.

screw CG, most of the stuff they show in Initial D is possible in rea life. I've seen a few drifting competitions in my days. and you also see some of the great driving they did for the movie in that clip. the movie is gonna be great Very Happy

(though i dont like the anime because it has no realistic damage, but i LOVE the arcade, one of the funnest use of money)

They don't have to recreate it. It's all about proper editing. They'll film a staged race, with the two cars, "racing" each other at half the speed (or less) of a real race. They'll do this a couple times.

Then they'll have the drivers (professional drifters of course) come down the track slightely faster, but solo, so that they can get some good drifting shots. They'll probably use tires with no grip so that the cars can drift at lower speeds.

Of course, they'll also do multiple passes, a 5-minute race will probably require several hours of film.

Then they'll edit it all together and the end result will look like Tak's drifting... one hopes.
