How come that the ratings between this site and other various sites, for instance Animenfo differs so greatly?

Naruto is rated quite high at Animenfo, having positioned it self at 8 at the top 100 list, whereas here it, is ranked as 40, which is a great distance.

Its not only Naruto, but other series as well, and i find this very puzzling, since the ratings are based on users opinions, which indicates that our opinions, and tastes are not similar to the ones at Animenfo.

Is Animenfo a site for newcomers, and that Naruto is easily appreciated for newer anime-watchers, and that people that has been into anime for a long time tend to look down on animes that are categorized for beginners. I might be wrong since i don’t find Naruto at all as an anime for beginners, and it might as well be wrong to divide anime-wathcers, as beginners and people with more experience with anime.

Moreover, Rose Of Versailles has been given the rating 8,7 at Animenfo, whereas here, it has only been given 7,4, and shouldn’t older series be more welcomed to veterans? Nonetheless, it seems to me that people here, tend to score lower than they do at Animenfo, or is it just that the users at Animenfo are too nice when they give their score. The inevitable question comes again, how come?

people hang in crowds with like minded people. Or is it too simplistic an explanation?

The difference between the two sites, with regards of reviews, is differing review styles and opinon. ANN.com gives better depth and detail with their reviews.

Let's look at a review on the Twelve Kingdoms by AnimeNfo.com
http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,880,rmksij,12_kokuki.html

And then compare it with ANN.com's review of it animenewsnetwork.com/reviews/display.php?id=650

As you can tell, there is a major difference in writing, quality, and depth between the two. That is why it is different. Plus, ANN is more up to date with anime news. Wink

Where do you draw the line between subjectivity and objectivity? Obviously with reviews there is a fine line, but with the use of user reviews there is almost always the case of subjective reviews. The reviewers at ANN try their best to keep their reviews as objective as possible. Giving us readers what we need to know about the title, why it is great or okay, etc with as much objectivity as they can. There will always be some subjectivity in their reviews, but from what I have read there isn't a lot in each review. At least that is my perspective.

ANN has its own set of reviewers and their reviews reflect the opinions of those reviewers only.

Animenfo is more of a fan polling style - where anyone can submit reviews. In a sense, that is a better gauge of what anime is popular (obviously Naruto, despite me thinking it sucks, is one of the most popular anime today).

Saying that ANN is superior to Animenfo is wrong because the two sites are doing two totally different things. The writing on ANN is clearly better, because that's what you get with dedicated writers, but saying that ANN's folks are smarter people, or have better opinions, is elitist at best.

The ratings calculations for ANN are much more sophisticated than a straight average, as I assume Animenfo uses. ANN's ratings page can put it better than I can:

Bayesian estimate:
ANN Ratings Page wrote:
This rating only includes titles that have at least 6 votes. The bayesian estimate is a statistical technique used to reduce the noise due to low sample counts. In effect, the less a title has votes, the more it is pulled towards the mean (7.1397). In other words, these are the titles that many people agree are great/awful.
bayesian rating = (v ÷ (v+m)) × R + (m ÷ (v+m)) × C
where:
R = average for the movie
v = number of votes for the movie
m = minimum votes required to be listed (currently 6)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 7.1397)

Weighted Average:
ANN Ratings Page wrote:
Titles with less than 4 votes are removed from the listing but are still counted in the ranking. This explains why there are gaps in the "#" column. The rating is an average of the scores given by voters, weighted to give less importance to users who tend to only rate very high or very low.

This could explain quite a bit of the difference.

"Birds of a feather flock together", eh?

Hey, my own take on the matter is 十人十色 - or as the English saying goes, "Different strokes for different folks".

i was thinking because Animenfo tends to have more fansubbed shows than ANN.

Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and Full Moon wo Sagashite aren't licensed, for example, and they're #2 and #3, respectively.

Animenfo is more of a fansub review site. In any case, you will see a lot of fansub being review. In any case, the review are crap.

Animenfo has a lot of shithead reviewer. If you read through the review, you notice that someone will give all 1 rating just because he didn't find the first episode interesting. Some reviewer will just give 1 because everyone else was giving it 10. I remember one guy was making negative comment to all the popular series while giving 10 to all the crappy series to piss people off. A lot of the review are unfair because a lot it's generally kids that watch fansub and get to post whatver they want.

I would say that ann's people are more smart/fair. Also the reason why Naruto isn't as high is because they're are a lot better anime.

I'm a member of both forums, and my observation is that a lot of the members over at Animenfo are very young, mostly around 16 or 17 (some as young as 14). Man, I feel really old over there, I think I'm the oldest regular poster there. I'm not sure about over here, but I think a lot of the members here are a lot older and more mature. Obviously this will have an effect on what appeals to the viewers. The level of maturity of the forum users (and therefore, what sort of anime appeals to them) is totally different between ANN and Animenfo.

edit:

Just thought I'd let your guys know. I usually come over here to post about serious stuff and get information. I usually just chat over there.

I write reviews at animenfo because I like to write. It is true that most reviews are terrible and often consist of one paragraph, or even one sentence, but there are some really great reviewers over there if you look.

I'm not sure if the Bayesian and weighted average ratings are indicative of 'best-rated' in the majority of audience though.

5 good votes puts an anime in the top 50s weighted average list.
17 in the Bayesian list.

Animenfo has a blander site, that's for sure. It's not very helpful sometimes, and they could have some better aricles. by and large, ANN does live up to its claim for being "The Internet's Most Trusted Anime News Source." I find that ANN has a very nice site that is extremely easy to navigate, and helps you learn a synonym for dictionary, too. Very Happy

That may be true, but I am going to have to look for the good ones. There is just not much to entice me to actually take the time to sift through them.
