i just read one of the latest review, Inuyahsa: affections touching across time, and apparently the dubed version is rated better than the subed version. i haven't seen the subed version soo.....dose anyone else feel that the dubed is better that the sub?
-this is the first time i have seen/herd of a dub being better that a sub. |

lately i think dubbed version are pretty good if not as good as sub....
Kenshi serie dubbed were very good Full metal panic incredible noir decent Ai Yori aoshi excellent .... most of recent anime are very good both in dubbed and subbed version.... the only one i really had a hard time with was Ceres... i mean i really couldn't stand Aya Dubbed voice

Depends entirely on personal preference. Most hard-core sub people whom I've talked to will never acknowledge that any dub could possibly be better than the original. I think they're fooling themselves, but that's just my opinion.
Hellsing is another example I would point to where the dub is clearly better, and I could name a couple dozen titles where the dub is just as good. Ai Yori Aoshi is a toss-up, though I like the dub on it. |

For me it'll depend on if they used the same voice cast, as I'm sure they did. I personally can't stand the dub, not because I'm a sub elitist, but I just can't stand the way they say certain names, like Kaede (pronounced like it's Spanish) and Kilala (it's clearly Kirara in the original).
Personally, I think the voice actors should be required to listen to the original Japanese track to pick up how things are pronounced. I could care less if the voice actors sound just like the original actors, as it is I'm going to have to rewatch the first episode of Peacemaker on DVD since my wife kept going on about how this person didn't sound the same or that person, I just care about little things, like pronunciation. |

I have a worse one. I just saw part of an ep of Gungrave on G4TechTV and they referred to a woman named "Milanda". Now I know that the Japanese sound is kind of part way between an "r" and an "l", but that's no excuse for choosing the wrong one. In Nadesico, I think they would have been better off changing Akito's name for the dub than pronouncing it "uh-KEE-to". |

I can't stand ADV dubs by the way. I don't know why, but I've never, ever liked any of them. I just got Peace Maker Kurogane yesterday, and I was hoping for something decent to finally put me on their bandwagon, but a LOT of people have Osakan accents, which REALLY sounds annoying in English when they equate it to the whole southern thing. 
Not to mention, the Japanese voices ironically had a more substantial amount of bass in their voices. Go fig... 
And as for the Kenshin dub, don't even get me started. I've got the posts to argue it too. Please read this,this, and this. 
But like Key said, it's just a personal preference.

i haven't really seen too many subs but i think that the voices of a distant star had better subs, and the whole "cant pronounce thing" i kinda like the pernounciation "kilala" vs "kirara". it just seems to roll off the tounge better. but somtimes i wish that they could get the pronounciations right.

Hmm... well, I don't think it was better than the sub, but Serial Experiments Lain has a pretty good dub. I would comment on shows like Cowboy Bebop or Case Closed (which have fantastic dubs), but I haven't seen them subbed. As for Inuyasha, the dub is decent, but I haven't seen it subbed either, so I can't say if it deserves to be rated higher than the sub.

So what's the big deal about the cat-creature in Inuyasha being pronounced as "Kylala" instead of "Kirara?" 'R' sounds often shift into 'L' sounds during translation, and sometimes this is the right way to do it. A particular example of this is Alucard from from Hellsing, whose name is pronounced Arucard in Japanese. I've actually seen people try to justify that the "Arucard" pronounciation should have been retained for the English version even though it's quite clear that the intent of the name is to be "Dracula" backwards.
And on that issue, I'll be very interested to see what is done with the translation of Scrapped Princess when it's released in the States next year. The fansubs I saw came from two different subbing houses, and both of them translated the name of the chief god differently. Will the American production use "Mauzer" or "Mauzel", I wonder? |

I prefer subbed to dubbed, always. I don't absolutely exclude dubs when I'm watching, especially if I'm watching the English-dubbed stuff I got from overseas, but most of the anime that I have are either subbed or dual-sound (usually left audio channel is Japanese, right audio channel is Chinese) and I usually don't like anime dubbed in Chinese. Them Chinese dubbers sound a little too weird, as if they speaking like they're singing instead of speaking normally. Maybe that's how classic Chinese speakers sound like since most off-mainland China Chinese don't/can't speak perfect Chinese.
For the English dubbed stuff, I have no complaints. It's just that I prefer to hear the dialogue in it's original Japanese, and I only watch an anime dubbed later to help me understand it (I just hope that the dialogue is not changed too drastically to accommodate the lip flaps). |

I dunno... I've been a pretty big supporter of subs (and fully support you on the arguments for the Karekano and Kenshin dubs) so it's rare for me for me to point out dubs I like from any company. Since ADV seems the primary one here though, I'd have to say that there are a couple of dubs I've liked from ADV. I'd definetly have to recommend Full Metal Panic, and even more so, Princess Nine, which frequently falls under the radar. Also, I liked the first half of the Sorcerer Hunters dub (directed by Matt Greenfield) but the second half was "Fosteriific". In that case though, you really can see just how big a role the director plays. As far as Nadesico goes, I loved a few of the lines in the dub, and aside from the pronunciation issues, I can live with it. It's not stellar, but I've also heard some pretty bad dubs too.

Eh, for me it depends on the Anime.
In essence, I prefer dubs only because I HATE reading those darn lines, and they cover up things.....ugh. And sometimes subs don't really give you enough of a feeling for the show, since it's very hard to translate Japanese to english properly....but anyway. I have no problem with subs though, and I'll watch them without complaint if I have to, or if the dub REALLY stinks, which I haven't had to do on a lot of the anime's I've watched. (Gravitation being an exception though...they really messed that one up )
Cowboy Bebop, InuYasha, Wolf's Rain, Trigun, Full Metal Alchemist, and a lot of the "newer" dubbed Animes have EXCELLENT dubs. It's just a matter of time before dubbers realize that you have to get TRAINED actors to do these sorts of things. Then people won't have to flame dubs so much.
