http://www.animenation.net/blog/2011/04/16/tokyopop-to-cease-north-american-publishing/
What was the point of them hyping up that they're "redoing the site' if they abandon the US market anyway? So, I wanted to see how many other manga publishers there are. These ones are the ones I know still exist: VIZ Media-->umbrella for Shoujo Beat, Shounen Jump, Signature, etc. Del Rey-->currently known as Kodansha USA Yen Press-->the glossy cover gods Vertical-->the non-glossy cover gods Digital Manga Publishing-->cool bros on the block. Oni Press-->manga-esque. Scott Pilgrim's publisher. Dark Horse-->they aren't afraid of title like Gantz and Narutaru (well, maybe a little on this one). Udon Entertainment-->they publish a lot of random sh*t BLUManga-->aka Tokyopop's yaoi line. Will this be affected by the North American branch shutting down? Yaoi Press-->'nough said. No Starch Press-->hey, I count those Manga guides. I would have failed some of my uni classes if it wasn't for those guides giving me a strong base to build off of. Seven Seas Entertainment-->gomanga.com is the site. Small but nice. These are the ones that still exist officially but they haven't published or updated their sites in forever: Media Blasters-->ancient website and forever on hiatus. Maybe they'll make a comeback *andfinishpublishingDoujinWorkcoughcough* Aurora Publishing-->kinda like Media Blasters but less sh*tty. They haven't updated since 2009. ALC Publishing-->Yuri headfront. 801 Media-->Yaoi headfront. Go! Comi-->site is still up. Pretty sure they're dead, though. Infinity Studios-->more manhwa than manga. No site. RIP: CMX Manga-->cancelled their line...my manga is forever incomplete ADV Manga-->must have had some crappy titles since I don't own a single thing from them. Tokyopop-->but hey, maybe we can buy the continuing volumes of our manga from Tokyopop UK? Though they don't seem to have a site up since the US is revamping theirs for no reason now....so I can't see what they actually publish currently. Special Guest: Madman Entertainment-->perhaps it can be used like Tokyopop UK since Madman is AU. Both English either way, derp. Did I leave any out? Any hidden unsung publishers? BLU's shutting down along with Tokyopop.
And you forgot Fantagraphics. http://comicsworthreading.com/2010/03/10/fantagraphics-manga-line-launches-with-moto-hagio-book/ |

Del Rey and Kodansha Comics are separate companies - Del Rey (who are primarily publishers of fantasy and sci-fi novels) have dropped their manga line, some of which will now be completed by Kodansha, who have an agreement with Del Rey (or, more accurately, Del Rey's owners Random House) to handle distribution and various other logistical duties. In other words, the companies are working together but they aren't one and the same.
Tokyopop UK was closed down years ago. Tokyopop Europe still exists but only publishes in German.
Bandai Fanfare There are also various comic publishers who don't specialise in manga but put out the occasional release - Drawn & Quarterly Fantagraphics Last Gasp Top Shelf Picturebox And then there are the publishers of smut comics - Icarus (presuming they're still in business - they've been very quiet recently) Eros NBM
Also ComicsOne, DrMaster, DHP, Manga Publishing, Broccoli, Gollancz Manga, CPM, Gutsoon!, Tanoshimi, Ironcat and probably a few others I'm forgetting about (plus at least a few you list as maybes, like Infinity Studios) along with various mainstream book publishers and Western comic book publishers who briefly dipped their toes in the water before returning to more profitable pursuits (e.g. Mandarin, IDW, Marvel, Boxtree, Titan etc.). |

Does Netcomics count? I know some people can be purists when it comes to the manga/manhwa divide...

If we want to be technical, then they don't. But...It's related, I think. Manga and manhwa (and manhua) are all separate entities, but I've never met a person who JUST reads manhwa or JUST reads manhua. (Though I have met people who only read manga.) Might as well include NetComics in that case. EDIT: Also, they don't specialize in manga, but Ponent Mon S.L. publishes some manga. Most of it, if not all, is by Jiro Taniguchi. |

Ponent Mon are a Spanish company - they work with the UK company Fanfare to put out English language versions of some of their titles but it's Fanfare that actually publishes them. Also, while Fanfare / Ponent Mon do publish a lot of Taniguchi's stuff (with more on the way), they also publish stuff by a bunch of other artists including Kan Takahama, Kiriko Nananan, Kazuichi Hanawa, Hideo Azuma and Hideji Oda. |

Ah, thanks for explaining! It mostly confused me because Amazon doesn't mention Fanfare; they list the publisher as Ponent Mon. |

Three years ago, Icarus (the hentai press) published a list of all known publishers of manga in English in the blog post "40 publishers releasing manga in French" (banner ad NSFW: www [dot] icaruscomics.com/wp_web/?p=1033 ; though Mr. Jones missed Chuang Yi Publishing).

Apologies if this is a little off topic, but does this mean they are printing books with the same covers and layouts etc? I have been contemplating a couple of series (one of which is Fairy tail) and they are apparently going to be continuing these series but I wouldn't want to buy all the Del Ray copies and find that the kodansha ones are different. If there are differences, does anyone know what they are? |

<shrug> See the Icarus blog. Simon Jones used to post at least daily through 5 June 2010, then 8 June, 16 June, a single post on 18 July, and since then silence. Apparently E-mail from at least one distributor (J-List's PCR Distribution) remains unanswered, and the only activity on the site is that the comment spam is deleted at irregular intervals (I track the blog page using Update Scanner). Edit: Fantagraphics Books' Eros Comix just released volume 1 of Yanagida-kun to Mizuno-san as Love & Hate, so they are still active as a manga publisher. |

Yeah, I think manga, manhwa, manhua are all instinctively going for the same thing. Which is why I added Oni Press for Scott Pilgrim's case. So if there are manhwa and manhua companies, feel free to add them.
@Jaymie May I proceed to foam at my mouth at the release of WANDERING SON?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;A; I am so happy right now! @Moomintroll I knew Kodansha USA continued a lot of the DelRey line so I thought they were bought out or something (at least for the manga). They seem like one entity, derp. I must be behind on the times, it just seems like yesterday Tokyopop UK was around. At least AU is still kicking. Holy cow bro! I am so glad you adding intense input in this. You my good man must make a Wikipedia page or something with your knowledge. I completely forgot about Broccoli! I still have copies of Kon Kon Kokon and Yoki Koto Kiku by Koge-Donbe. I remember being super pissed because one of them had a special DJ and the other a special sticker set you could request when you mailed in the flyer at the back of the book and it got returned to because the company went under like the month before. ;__; @ReaKon Well, I believe they're keeping the same format. I know for a fact that they finished off Tsubasa, RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE in the exact same format as it started in. They kept the DelRey logo and everything. Well, it was only 1 book so I can see why they would do it like that. Local libraries carry a lot of manga nowadays. I'd request on the catalog for Fairy Tail and compare it to the new ones in a book store. I haven't been able to buy their manga recently since the flip so sorry I can't be of much use. |

Thanks for the kind words.
Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC were amongst the small handful of titles that Del Rey decided to continue publishing even after they handed everything else over to Kodansha, which is why they retain the Del Rey logo (link). The new Kodansha Comics site just went up so you can see what they're doing with their covers (along with details of all of their planned releases between now and August). Don't think they have any pictures that show the spines though. It's possible they'll want to highlight their own branding, rather than go for something that compliments Del Rey's (the same way DrMaster did when they took over all of ComicsOne's ongoing series back in the day), which may lead to some mismatched bookshelves. It's not a big issue as far as I'm concerned but I can see how it could bug some people if they take that route. |

Add Dr. Master Publishing to this catagory. They're mostly likely belly up or close to it. Their website hasn't seen any action in years. |

Thanks for the link moomintroll. I hadn't seen that website.
By the looks of it, the cover layout is the same (which I guess makes sense as it is similar to the japanese design I think). I am not too worried about the change of logo, as long as overall the spine looks similar. I thought I read somewhere that Kodansha are going to close their US company. Is that true or just speculation? |
