Ill start off by saying that I believe nine out of the ten animes in that first list deserve to be there however I fail to understand why Clannad the After Story is number 2 in the ratings. I watched the series and i really dont see why everybody seemed to like this anime so much. Could anybody answer me why this anime is so highly praised with a 9.03 rating?

So? It's just your opinion is different from the mass population of the user base of this website. Your favorite title may not be mine and vice versa.

IMHO it's roughly the same reason why Code Geass R2 is so highly rated: they're sequels. Almost by definition, the only ones who watch a sequel are the ones who enjoyed the first series. So you have a high self-selection bias at work here, ensuring that the only ones who watch and rate the series are those who were likely to give it a high rating. I'd like to improve the ratings to account for that bias, but how... this is a pretty tough nut to crack.

Perhaps taking ratings of those who have watched the original but not the sequel into account? Maybe in the future a non-original title can have multiple scores, including and excluding ratings from those who have watched / read the original.

Slightly OT: methinks this rule applies to Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan as well (I've read several sources saying it's the best ST movie), particularly with the first movie not living up its expectation.
