Wow... talk about things being taken for granted. Have to wonder how many fans had *that* specific issue pop into their minds.
Aren't a number of manga already printed on recycled paper over there? Or at least, in most newsstand anthologies? I recall buying a Shonen Jump issue years ago with newspaper-textured multi-colored (and I assume recycled) paper... |

Is this the advent of digitally produced manga? I certainly hope not.

Seeing all this destruction on the news, and how it affected the country as a whole, the quake would seem to mark a new era in Japan, in every area of life. Manga, Anime, and media industries included.

Making and recycling electronics is a bit messier than making and recycling paper books. |

Oh man I didn't even think about that. I really really hope Japan can make it through this. I wish there was something I could do about it but there isn't. All I can do is pray for them.

I can see someone in the future writing a paper or even a novel on how this disaster changed the comic industry. I'm not trying to sound like some harbinger of doom for manga or anything... but this is the type of thing that people love to dissect and (if it's well written) read about. |

Suppy shortages might also affect the anime industry, although I don't expect to the same degree. Much of the material is created and processed digitally. However, even electronics have been affected by the quake and if they use videotape they could run into supply shortages.

Wow, those photos look pretty bad. I wonder if any of what's left is salvageable? Looks like it'll take awhile for them to prop these industries back on their feet. They'll probably have to outsource work to other parts of Japan (or nearby countries) in the meantime.
I'm a little surprised people are suggesting a migration to e-manga considering the circumstances, but I suppose it is a fair question. I wonder how many people actually prefer e-reader versions of manga to actual paperbacks these days? I'd go for a good tankoubon any day, and have difficulty imagining that most people would prefer digital (that, y'know, aren't just reading pirated stuff, but actually buying it). I hope Japan's paper industry is able to get back on its feet! |

it's messier, but you don't have to cut down as many trees. We already cut down like 50% of rainforest. Earth used to have way more trees until we cut them down.
