I've been watching the frequent updates of the monthly release dates, and a question popped in my head. If you preorder, how early do you consider putting money down for it? Do you preorder as soon as it posts online? Wait for TRSI's sales? Or do you not preorder at all?

Personally, I don't like to preorder until at the very least the beginning of the month. Since I don't like to commit my money months in advance, waiting for TRSI to cycle for the appropriate sale is right out. So what do you all do with your precious dollars?

I'm sure I 100% understand the question, but since--at least in all the places I shop for my anime stuff--I'm never charged until I'm actually shipped, I always pre-order, so it's never a matter of "putting money down months in advance" for me. If I pre-order something and then it goes on sale, I'll just re-order it and get the original order cancelled.

But yeah, I always pre-order if it's something I want and I know I'll have the money when it gets released.

I usually always pre-order at least a month in advance on the off chance it will ship early if I really want it. If I want it but don't feel I need it right away then I'll wait for a sale.

There are several ways I look at this, but it comes down to one of several things:

If someone has the said pre-order on sale I will put the order in when I see it out, such as TRSI with their company sale, or when RACS has pre-orders on discount, or Amazon.com with a pre-order discount etc.

The other two things I take into consideration is what time of the month does the release come out, and is it a high on my list to get. I tend to have a bit more money around the start of the month and the 2nd week of the month and less towards the end of the month. PO a single DVD BD, a set, or manga for say < $30 is not going to be a problem for me since I can afford that. If say there are a lot of things coming out at the same time I will put in priority what I want to order then just get what has a higher priority to me.

Of course if stuff gets shipped early then I can through the time out, but that's what I do.

I don't preorder usually though there are exceptions.

1. When I think there is a good chance that the item will sell out in preorder. (figures mostly)
2. When I'm really excited about a show. (once or twice a year)

When I started ordering online, I used to preorder a lot. I quit when I realized that I wasn't watching the shows as soon as they came and the shipping charges were getting expensive. It can be cheaper to order two or more items at one time and if you are patient you can qualify for free shipping. RACS offers it for a purchase of as little as $50. It is media mail which can be really slow but it is worth it.

I used to be an "only order items in stock" guy. I came over to the pre-order side originally to take advantage of TRSI's company specific sales. Putting in a pre-ordered item amidst a bunch of "in stock" items is a great way to reserve the stuff you want, but delaying for however long you need to get the scratch together.

With figures, pre-ordering is almost a must. If you wait for a hot figure to get officially released you might be out of luck. Funny this topic should come up because today for the first time I figured out exactly how many items I've got pre-ordered:

- 10 figures (all from Japanese online retailers like HLJ, amiami and Hobby Search);
- 4 packages from TRSI that collectively make up 13 anime TV titles, 2 OAVs, 1 movie, 27 manga volumes of various series and 1 light novel.

So yeah, I kinda depend on the pre-order system.

I've got 6 items on pre-order at the moment, and 2 regular orders. The pre-orders are mostly for April except for one which was delayed until June.

rightstuf ships early almost all the time. usually weeks early, not a few days. pre-ordering from them is a no brainer if you are a member and they have a sale.

Right? That's another thing I love about pre-ordering--if you order from the right place, more times than not you'll get your shit way sooner than someone who waits until the actual release date.

It also depends on when you pre-order. I've had it happen where I pre-ordered something and had to wait almost two months after the release date before my item got shipped to me, so it all depends if you po something that is going to be a hot seller and if you po early.

I buy when there's a sale at TRSI. I don't particularly worry about the release date, if it's in 4 months or happened 4 weeks ago- cost is the priority for me.

As you can imagine though, it means I typical have half a dozen or so orders open at TRSI at any given time. I put the money aside at the time of ordering, even though I haven't been billed yet, just so I don't have to worry about it. I've found this has the added benefit of giving me an invisible 'cushion' against overdrafts- the 1 or 2 times I've miscalculated and gone 2 bucks into the 'negative' didn't matter, since I had a hunk of money not noted in that balance waiting for TRSI stuff to come in. It's handy. Wink

When I first started ordering online I only ordered stuff that was in stock because I don't like having potential charges on my account (I use a debit card) hanging out. I ended up doing it with manga a lot as I would add pre-orders for series I was collecting during publisher sales at TRSI to get free shipping, now I do it sometimes with DVD's as well. With my huge backlog of titles to watch I am never in a hurry to get stuff. Sometimes I wait also for the "next" sale to see if more things I'm interested in are available. I skipped the recent Vertical sale at TRSI because the final volume of Black Jack had not been solicited yet, by the time the next Vertical sale comes I should be able to complete my collection and I doubt I'll miss any (already have Vol. 14 preordered from prior sale and that has not been released yet).
