Personally, I'd rather see the Cobra movie, ideally with alternate Yello soundtrack as an option. 'Course, you could always look for old Manga UK import tapes, if you're that desperate.
That's probably because it's from the director of Tokyo Drifter, Branded to Kill, and Pistol Opera, Seijun Suzuki. Pulp magazine had a brief article once which claimed Lupin was originally modeled in style after his films, and I guess they decided to return the favor, as he got a directing gig on the movie and the Pink Jacket show. And yeah, I want my Babylon, too. People hate the hell out of it, for some reason, but it's got a good theme song and is, for my money, on par with most 80s cop comedies. Discotek allegedly had the rights to it, though, but is now claiming it'd be "too expensive" to license, so I dunno if we'll ever get it on R1. But it is available as an import.
I never got why we never saw Ogre Slayer on DVD, but apparently, Rumiko Takashi OVAs predating Ranma have intentionally been made OOP by Kitty. I'd love to have a DVD of Maris the Chojo, but it ain't gonna happen.
I liked the dub, but it's not really important to me. It would be an easier sell for the company, though. Not sure if it's an issue with Viz or Toei, however.
Could be worse if you want the live-action film on DVD. Patrick Macias said the reason that never happened is because the music rights are prohibitive.
To be honest, I'm actually hoping that the recent broadcast news suggests we'll get new editions with the Japanese versions soon. Or maybe they're just exploiting the movie adaptation story to get some air-time. 
I'm kind of wondering if one of the reasons we never got Cockpit on DVD here is because of its controversial subject matter.
Maetel Legend had more marketing potential, even though it sucks.
Hey, what's wrong with the Macross: DYRL dub? 
I have an import of the UK dub of Lupin: Goodye Lady Liberty, which was directed by Osamu Dezaki. [I think he did another one later on, but this one was kind of trippy.] I also at one point kept the Midnight Eye Goku OVAs on tape, but I ended up deciding the manga was better. Plus, I recorded certain Lupin red jacket episodes when they were on tv last year, including the Miyazaki stuff, and a cross-over episode with Rose of Versailles, which, if you don't mind, is on Youtube in Italian. |

The one series I would love for someone to lose money on releasing is Pretty Sammy the tv series, an amazing parody of magical girls shows that get's some surprising development. Any series that mocks trying to force a new character into the plot by claiming she was always there needs to be on DVD.

I would totally buy a One Pound Gospel DVD. It's a really interesting love story in that the nun rejects the boxer's physical advances flat-out, so questions of whether and when they're going to kiss or sleep together don't exist. There's only how they're interacting in the here and now. The manga itself doesn't do this; they mention that she's a novice and hasn't taken her vows yet, giving the boxer some hope that he can convince her to choose him over Jesus.
I hate Locke the Superman, though. Like Crusher Joe, it's just one action set-piece after another with so little connection that it feels horribly disjointed. |

Charred- Geneon released that under the "Magical Project S" label on DVD, two 13-episode 2-disc sets.
Anime VHS I'm hording whose DVD release looks unlike- -Suikoden Demon Century- such a silly/violent OVA -Clash of the Bionoids [dubbed version of MDYRL?] I'd also lump in CLAMP School, but Bandai actually dubbed it and released a DVD set of it last year. Still, was glad to have the vhses when it looked unlikely, and Baoh, which had a dvd, but it's super rare/OOP too. |

Thanks for the tip last time I checked they where only selling the VHS ones. Too bad their too expensive for me at 55 dollars for 13 episodes. |

I'm surprised Video Girl Ai wasn't mentioned. Perhaps just overlooked? Despite it having a dated look (with the fact that a VHS tape is a central device in the show itself), it's definitely worth it for Viz to take a chance on a DVD release.

I agree it bites that some anime with Region 1 VHS releases never made it to Region 1 DVD, and this even counts the old school types. Fortunately, we can count on anime conventions to sell hard-to-find anime VHS tapes and DVD discs (for example: I managed to purchase a VHS copy of Streamline Pictures' English dub of "Dirty Pair: Flight 005 Conspiracy" from the garage sale area at Otakthon 2010).
Good thing the Otaku Anime of Concordia University group (whose building is in Montreal) decided to sell off some old anime tapes from its library while trying to make space for new DVD volumes (it was 50 cents per tape sold off). That sure helped some anime fans take home hard-to-find anime tapes and DVDs, and that's how I got "The Cockpit" on video. That anime I recommend for anyone who likes watching historical war movies. |

I have a mix of the VHS releases myself, thougg borrowed the dvd to check out some eps I hadn't seen. They're pretty well done, though still sub only I guess I'd also have- -the Streamline dubs of the DPair movies and the Silent Mobius movie [I think the Bandai release only has the new dub w/the TV cast, though I liked the TV cast] -a volume of AWOL. -Escaflowne Best Collection [I kind of liked the spedup plot] -Dark Warrior vol.1 from ADV Films [this one's kind of awful] -Fairyland movie [I think Justin reviewed this one in Buried Treasure] Last edited by Paploo on Sun Feb 27, 2011 6:52 pm; edited 1 time in total |

VIZ released it on DVD twice- once as a 2-disc set, another time all on one disc. They did the same thing with Please Save My Earth, though both are OOP. |

the only thing i can think of that I'm fond of that hasn't been put on DVD is
"Magical Princess Gigi" (Minky Momo: Ronde in my Dream OAV) "Wee Wendy" (Tongari Boshi no Memole) and "Flower Angel" (Hana no Ko Lun Lun) I think Candy Candy and Honey Honey (Honey Honey Suteki no Bouken) were put on English VHSs too. I don't have them, but I'd like to. they were all cut up and cobbled back together with silly dubs to make a movie for girls rather then the full series run on TV (actually i take that back, Honey Honey used to run on TV I believe) they're not really faithful releases and they're aged pretty badly, so they probably wouldn't even make good movies to kids who don't know the difference, so putting them on a DVD is probably pretty pointless. but I replaced my TV that had a VCR attached to it with a nice digital one this past Christmas. Its nice that I can watch Blu-ray now don't get me wrong, but now I cant watch Princess Gigi ever again...(and i'm trying to hunt down a cheap VCR, but so far no luck) |

There were never 2-disc releases of either of these (unless you count the R2 of VGAi and the Korean R3 of PSME). Mike didn't mention either because they had DVD releases and this column was on shows that weren't. |

I looked through my VHS collection and found some more obscure anime that hasn't been released on DVD yet:
Ambassador Magma - Early 90's Tezuka series, don't know much about it since I haven't actually watched it. Dallos - Early Mamoru Oshii OVA compressed into a movie. Dub's terrible and nearly 40 minutes were cut. Can't really recommend it, but it's out there. Dancougar - Mid 80's mecha series Grey: Digital Target - Very similar to MD Geist, but actually a decent movie. Lensman - Star Wars ripoff based loosely on E.E. Smith's space opera series from the 30's. Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals - Mid 90's OVA by Rintaro is a loose sequel to Final Fantasy V. Robot Carnival - 80's scifi anthology with lots of big names directing segments. Techno Police - Really bad 80's scifi/cop OVA gets hilariously bad dub. Fun was had by all. Zillion - Scifi series from the late 80's about kids with cool guns fighting aliens. I also have a four-tape box set called "Space-Out Japanimination" that comes with random episodes of Gaiking [Demon Dragon of the Heavens Gaiking], Spaceketeers [Science Fiction Saiyuki Starzinger], Starvengers [Getter Robo G], and Grandizer [UFO Robot Grendizer], all mecha series from the 70's. They actually did put out the movie and OVAs in one DVD set, but it's long out of print and used copies are pretty pricey. One anime I would love to have on DVD is Goku: Midnight Eye. The first one at least is one of those great violence and sex-filled OVAs that could only have come from the late 80's - early 90's. |

Justin- really? I guess I must of confused them with somethingelse- for some reason I thought both had a re-release before they went OOP.
CPM released both of those on DVD- Garaga as a bilingual disc, and Ariel as a subonly disc of both OVA's. Where's AnimeonDVD's catalogue check when you need it? Also, don't trust one-eyed Jane. |

I still have my VHS copy of the Cockpit. Even tho I don't have a VCR, I probably wont ever get rid of it.
